CHARGERS ROLL PAST LANCERS

The Charger baseball team swept the visiting Mount Marty Lancers 4-2 and 17-10 at the Bishop Mueller Complex Saturday afternoon.
 
Game one – W, 4-2
 
The Cliff used a big fourth inning and a complete game on the mound to defeat Mount Marty, 4-2.

After falling behind early, the Chargers responded with timely hitting and strong pitching to secure the conference victory.

Mount Marty struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on an error to plate two runs and take a 2-0 lead.

Briar Cliff answered in the bottom half of the first when Cade Marquardt drove in Cael Walrod with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half.

The Chargers pulled even in the third inning as Grant Devecsery delivered an RBI single to center, tying the game at 2-2.

The decisive moment came in the fourth inning. Greyson Kay launched a two-run home run to give Briar Cliff its first lead of the game at 4-2, a margin that would hold the rest of the way.

On the mound, Brock Saya was in control throughout, tossing a complete game. Saya allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking one.

Offensively, the Chargers tallied nine hits on the day. Marquardt led the way with a 3-for-4 performance and an RBI, while Devecsery added a hit and an RBI. Kay's two-run homer proved to be the difference.
 
Game two – W, 17-10
The Chargers jumped out early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Nico Sall delivered an RBI single before Damon Schmid added a run-scoring groundout to give Briar Cliff a 2-0 lead.

Mount Marty answered with a big second inning, plating four runs highlighted by a two-run home run from Tyler Vance to take a 4-2 advantage. The Lancers added another run in the third to extend the lead to 5-3.

Briar Cliff chipped away, scoring once in both the second and third innings before breaking through in the fifth. The Chargers pushed across three runs in the frame, highlighted by RBI hits from Devecsery and Jake Christianson along with a sacrifice fly from Kay to reclaim a 7-5 lead.

The offensive surge continued in the sixth as Briar Cliff added three more runs, with Marquardt and Schmid each delivering RBI doubles and Christianson adding another run-scoring hit to make it 10-5.

After Mount Marty cut into the deficit with a solo home run in the seventh, Briar Cliff responded with its biggest inning of the day. The Chargers plated five runs in the bottom half, highlighted by home runs from Cael Walrod and Marquardt, extending the lead to 15-6.

Mount Marty rallied with four runs in the eighth, but Briar Cliff answered once again. Marquardt capped his standout performance with another two-run home run in the eighth to push the lead to 17-10.
Caleb Geisler earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Marquardt had a career day, going 5-for-5 with three home runs and five RBIs. Walrod added three hits, including a home run, while Sall and Schmid each recorded multiple hits. Christianson also contributed three hits and three RBIs in the win.

The Cliff improve to 13-14 (6-2 GPAC) and will travel to Crete, Nebraska next Saturday to take on the Doane Tigers. Game one is slated for 1 p.m. with game two to follow shortly after.
