The Charger baseball team split their doubleheader Friday against the Benedictine Ravens in Atchison, Kansas.
Game 1 – L, 2-3
Nick Hays put together a strong performance on the mound for the Chargers, tossing six innings and allowed zero earned runs while recording two strikeouts. He forced 11 ground outs in the outing.
In the top of the second,
Cade Marquardt led off with a single to get a runner on base.
Kaden Allred pinch ran and stole second to put a runner in scoring position.
Damon Schmid's one-out RBI single carded the Chargers first run.
The Ravens took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on a fielding error. Another fielding error in the bottom of the sixth added to make it a two-run lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Chargers looked to take the lead after loading the bases with two outs.
Wyatt Gettman's infield RBI single cut the lead to one. The Ravens were able to escape the jam to take game one.
Nico Sall went two-for-four at the plate with a double while Schmid went two-for-three with two doubles.
Raenan Padilla and Marquardt each drew two walks.
Game 2 – W, 4-3
Singles from
Caleb St. Cyr, Sall, and Marquardt loaded the bases for the Chargers in the top of the third. Padilla carded the game's first run with a RBI walk.
Jake Christianson was struck by a pitch in the inning to plate another run to give BC a 2-0 lead.
The Ravens responded with two runs of their own to even the score.
In the top of the fourth, a leadoff single from Schmid followed by a double from St. Cyr put runners in scoring position. Marquardt was intentionally walked to load the bases. Padilla capitalized with a RBI single to give the Chargers the lead.
On the mound for the Chargers,
Brendan Ward tossed 6.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits while recording three strikeouts.
Zach LaMont in relief tossed 2.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts. LaMont retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win.
Marquardt, Sall, and St. Cyr all recorded two hits in the contest.
The Chargers move to 3-9 and will conclude their four-game series against Benedictine tomorrow in Atchison, Kansas. Game one is slated for 12 p.m.
