The Charger wrestling team placed seventh at the GPAC Wrestling Championships after day two in Orange City, Iowa Saturday. The Chargers totaled 61.5 team points at the tournament.
"First, I would like to commend the guys in the program for a solid season. We've taken huge strides as a program, but still have more distance to cover," said Head Coach
Donaco Watts. "Rod did a great job navigating the deepest bracket in the conference to punch his ticket to Wichita and we still have Dante and Jackson with a shot for at-large bids. We'll know the answer to that on Wednesday."
Jarrod Gilliam in the 133-pound bracket finished fourth after going 2-2 in the tournament. After falling to Doane's Matthew Terrence, Gilliam took a 4-3 decision over Hastings' Justin Rodriguez. He would fall in his final bout to Kipp Cordes of Dakota Wesleyan 7-3 decision.
Jackson Balmer in the 165-pound bracket finished fourth went 3-2 in the tournament. He defeated Jackson Remmers of Dakota Wesleyan by a 11-5 decision followed by a pin victory. He dropped a 9-7 decision to Cole Price of Concordia in his final match.
Jeremiah Bethel finished fifth in the 184-pound bracket and defeated Jaxon Quail of Dakota Wesleyan with a 18-9 decision.
Trystan Berry at 149 finished fifth and went 2-2 in the tournament. He avenged his early tournament loss against Johnny Burnette of Northwestern in his final match, taking a 4-0 decision win.
Erik Lessears at 165 and
Dante Rigal at 133 finished sixth in their respective brackets.
The Doane Tigers captured the team tournament title.
