The Charger baseball team concluded their four-game series against New College of Florida, dropping their doubleheader Saturday afternoon 4-3 and 13-5 in Sarasota, Florida.
Game one – L, 3-4
The Cliff in the bottom of the third placed runners on first and second after
Jake Christianson and
Raenan Padilla drew back-to-back walks.
Cade Marquardt opened the scoring shortly after with a three-run shot to give Briar Cliff a 3-0 lead.
New College of Florida quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh the Banyans scored three runs to earn the walk-off win.
For the Chargers,
Wyatt Gettman went two-for-two at the plate. Christianson drew two walks in the contest.
Brock Saya in the start tossed six innings and surrendered just one run scattered across four hits while recording four strikeouts.
Game two – L, 5-13
In the top of the first, Marquardt again got the Chargers on the board, this time with a RBI single to drive in Padilla. The Banyans answered with three runs in the next half-inning to take a two-run lead.
In the top of the third, the Chargers loaded the bases following a single by
Nico Sall. With two-outs,
Caleb St. Cyr hit a two RBI double to right field to tie the game. St. Cyr was thrown out at third trying to stretch the play into a triple.
In the top of the fifth and trailing by two, Sall launched one over the wall to cut the lead by one. Marquardt would score on a wild pitch to even the score.
New College of Florida would tally eight runs between the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning extended their lead.
Marquardt, Sall, and St. Cyr each tallied two hits in the contest.
Landon Waldschmitt and Padilla recorded a hit.
The Chargers fall to 2-6 on the season and will return to action next Friday, as they host Bellevue University at the Bishop Mueller Complex in Sioux City, Iowa. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
