The Charger softball team wrapped up Saturday, going 2-0, defeating Bismarck State in five innings 9-1, and carrying that momentum into game 2 against Dickinson State to win 4-3.
Game 1 vs Bismarck State – W 9-1
In their first game of the day against Bismarck State, BCU struck first in the second inning when
Emily Daprato lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home two runs. The Chargers added to the advantage in the bottom of the third as
Kenadee Loew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and
Aubrey White followed with a two-run single to push the lead further.
White earned the win in the circle for Briar Cliff Varsity Softball, allowing six hits and one unearned run over five innings while striking out three and walking three.
The Chargers finished the game with 11 hits.
Lauryn Mattox, White,
Brooke Oppliger, and
Sydney Ebel each recorded two hits, while White, Loew, and
Elizabeth Austin drove in two runs apiece. Rolland paced the Mystics offensively, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Game 2 vs Dickinson State – W 6-5
The Chargers carried the momentum into game two against Dickinson State, jumping out to an early lead in the top of the first when Mattox grounded out, and
Sydney Mennenga doubled to right field, each scoring a run. The Chargers added two more in the second inning as Ebel singled to center, making it 4-0.
Dickinson State responded by tying the game in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a triple from Wilharm and a fielder's choice by Lijewski. Briar Cliff regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Mattox, but the Blue Hawks answered again in the fifth to knot the score at five.
The decisive moment came in the top of the seventh when
Leah Montes delivered a clutch single to drive in the go-ahead run.
Abby Hughes closed the door to earn the win, allowing just one run on three hits over four innings in relief.
Mattox, Montes, Mennenga, and Ebel each collected two hits in the nightcap, with Mattox and Ebel driving in two runs apiece. Montes also stole two bases as Briar Cliff swiped four total and played flawless defense, committing no errors.
The Chargers return to action Friday, February 20, taking on Valley City State and Mayville State in Sioux Center, IA. Game times are set for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
