The Briar Cliff football team celebrated Homecoming in style Saturday afternoon, rolling past the Waldorf Warriors 38-7 at Memorial Field in a dominant GPAC performance.
The Chargers totaled 308 yards while limiting the Warriors to just 146 yards.
Waldorf struck first, taking a 7-0 lead off a run by Ory Vananda-Walker. The Chargers answered immediately when
Cormyc Guerrero returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown tying the game at 7-7.
After forcing a Waldorf interception, Briar Cliff took its first lead on a 12-yard touchdown pass from
Brock Saya to
Kymani Fleurme. Guerrero then added his second return touchdown of the quarter, taking a punt 75 yards to the end zone to put the Chargers ahead 21-7.
Briar Cliff continued to build its advantage before halftime. With just five seconds remaining in the second quarter, Saya connected with Fleurme for a 35-yard touchdown giving the Chargers a 28-7 lead at the break.
The Chargers added to their lead in the third quarter when
Sveinung Torring connected on a 24-yard field goal following a 14-play, 64-yard drive that consumed more than eight minutes.
Briar Cliff capped the scoring early in the fourth quarter when Saya punched in a one-yard touchdown run finishing a six-play, 43-yard drive to make it 38-7.
Saya led the Chargers through the air, completing 15-of-22 passes for 175 yard and two touchdowns. Fleurme led all receivers with four receptions for 64 yard and two touchdowns, while Guerrero added two catches for 38 yards.
On the ground,
Terrance Topete led Briar Cliff with 50 yards on 12 carries.
Chase Thomas added 28 yards on six carries, while
William Quintana finished with 20 yards on five attempts.
Guerrero provided the game's biggest special teams spark, totaling 173 return yards including his 98-yard kickoff return and 75-yard punt return for touchdowns.
The Chargers' defense held Waldorf to 77 rushing yards, and 69 passing yards
Tegen Hoffman led the way with 10 total tackles, while
Kyle Gibson and
Marquise Thomas-Gray each recorded five tackles. Thomas-Gray also added a sack and forced fumble.
Briar Cliff intercepted Waldorf twice with
Keivon Booker and the Chargers' defense coming up with key takeaways throughout the afternoon.
The victory gives the Chargers their first win of the season, moving Briar Cliff to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in GPAC play.
The Chargers return to action October 10, hosting Northwestern. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
