The Briar Cliff football team hosted the No. 20 Northwestern Red Raiders falling 52-0 in GPAC action.
Northwestern opened the scoring with 6:03 remaining in the first quarter, capping an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Colby Duncan. The Red Raiders added another touchdown late in the quarter before extending their lead to 28-0 at halftime.
The Red Raiders continued to find success offensively in the second half, scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 49-0 advantage into the final period. Northwestern added a field goal in the fourth quarter to secure the 52-0 victory.
Briar Cliff totaled 167 yards of offense, including 89 rushing yards and 78 passing yards. The Chargers converted six of 16 third-down opportunities.
Brock Saya led the Chargers through the air, completing 10 of 24 passes for 78 yards.
Ezra Heiner recorded the team's longest reception, a 21-yard catch, while
Chase Thomas finished with two receptions for 18 yards.
On the ground,
Cormyc Guerrero led Briar Cliff with 24 rushing yards on five carries. Thomas added 31 yards on 10 attempts, while
Terrance Topete recorded 30 rushing yards on 11 carries.
Defensively,
Dayton Harrell led the Chargers with nine total tackles, including eight solo stops.
Tegen Hoffman recorded six tackles, while
Kyle Gibson,
Cameron Cayou and
Michael Casarez each finished with five.
Mikhei Turner contributed a sack for a loss of four yards, and the Chargers recorded two sacks for nine yards overall.
The Chargers return to action next Saturday, October 17, traveling to Sioux Center, IA to take on the Dordt Defenders. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
