CHARGERS BOW OUT OF NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

The Charger baseball team's national tournament run came to a close, falling to the Stallions of Abraham Baldwin 9-5 in Lakeland, Florida.

ABAC quickly loaded the bases in the top of the first and built an early 7-0 lead.

Brock Saya came out of the bullpen for the Chargers and tossed 7.2 innings and gave up just two earned runs on eight hits while recording six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the second the Chargers put runners at the corners with one out after Damon Schmid recorded an infield single. Rance Bryant put The Cliff on the board after a one-run single to left center.

In the bottom of the fifth the Chargers continued to cut into ABAC's lead with a RBI double from Cade Marquardt and a RBI single from Cam Riemer to cut the deficit to 7-3. A RBI single from Schmid made it a three-run game.

A sac-fly from Nico Sall in the bottom of the sixth cut the Stallion lead to 7-5. ABAC would go on to add two more runs in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to four.

BCU looked to rally in the bottom of the ninth as Clayton Luett led off the inning with a single. Riemer drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. ABAC retired the final three batters to preserve the win.

Diego Trujillo and Schmid led the team with three hits each. Marquardt, Sall, and Bryant all recorded two hits in the contest.

The Chargers finish the season with a 29-24 (17-11 GPAC) mark and made their first NAIA National Tournament appearance since the 2015 season. The Cliff also captured the GPAC Tournament Title this spring and were 12-5 at the Bishop Mueller Complex. The Chargers in the last 12 games of conference play went 11-1 and carried the momentum into the post season.
