The 8
th ranked Charger women's basketball team used a fast start and a balanced offensive attack to down Mount Marty 88–69 in Yankton, South Dakota Saturday afternoon.
Abby Lee powered the Chargers with 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while shooting 9-for-14 from the field.
Mallie McNair added 19 points, four rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes.
Taylor Sodeman scored 14 points and matched Lee with five assists as Briar Cliff shot 55.7% from the floor and 43.3% from beyond the arc.
The Chargers opened the game on a tear, putting up 31 points in the first quarter and hitting six 3-pointers to build an early lead they never surrendered. Briar Cliff led 56–43 at halftime and pushed the margin to as many as 20 in the fourth.
Briar Cliff's ball movement was sharp throughout, finishing with 26 assists on 34 made baskets.
Mount Marty was led by Lacey Sprakel, who scored a game-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Kaela Martinez added 19 points and five 3-pointers, but the Lancers were held to 39.7% shooting and managed just 10 points in the final quarter.
Both teams scored 38 points in the paint, but Briar Cliff turned 12 Mount Marty turnovers into 18 points while limiting the Lancers to 11 points off giveaways.
The Cliff improves 10-2 (4-2 GPAC) and will return to the Newman Flanagan Center this upcoming Wednesday to host cross-town rival Morningside. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
