Chargers Slug It Out With Tigers

CRETE, Neb. – It was a fight to the end as the Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-6 GPAC, 6-12) lost 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-17) to Doane (1-5 GPAC, 5-13), Saturday night at the Haddix Center.

In the first set, Doane started off quick getting up 7-2.  Briar Cliff fired back with a 9-2 run.

The Chargers forced an error to go up 11-9.  The Tigers came back to tie at 11-11.  From there, BCU and Doane traded points.

Down 24-22, sophomore Aliyah Basham crushed the ball down the middle and senior Kiersten Baker stuffed the hitter to make it 24-24.  The Tigers got the next two points to take the set.

In the second set, Doane was on fire early.  The Tigers got off to a 12-4 start and had a 19-14 lead.

Briar Cliff then dug deep inside.  Basham got a kill off an impressive set from senior Natalie Hughes.  Senior Anesa Davenport served up four straight points to tie the set at 19-19.

From there, Doane and the Chargers slugged it out.  BCU scored three straight to take the lead at 24-23.

The Tigers fought off that set point.  Freshman Aubrey Hoeft smashed the ball off the block to put Briar Cliff one away from the set win, 25-24.  Doane scored three straight to stun the Chargers.

In the third set, Basham fired the ball down the line to put BCU up 8-7.  The Tigers scored six straight points to effectively end the match.

Volleyball head coach Lindsey Weatherford
"The energy our team started the match with was by far the best energy we have had all season. Kiersten (Baker) and Aubrey (Hoeft) had an explosive evening, both on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. They continue to terminate the ball well and are the crux of our block at the net. We put Marta (Barriguinha) into the lineup today.  I'm proud of Marta as she really fueled us on offense. Our team has been playing hard and the energy of our athletes continues to build along with their experience in competition situations."

For Briar Cliff, Baker had 10 kills and hit .308 while Hoeft had nine kills, four total blocks and hit .421.  Hughes sparked the attack with 33 assists while adding 11 digs.  Defensively, junior Avery Beller had 14 digs and senior Taryn Nothem collected 10 digs. It was Beller's 19th straight double-digit dig match.

For Doane, Natalie Wood had 12 kills and Taylor Sluka had 10 kills.

Briar Cliff returns home, Friday, Oct. 4 playing College of St. Mary's (Neb.).  The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
