Briar Cliff Gets Nipped By The Flames

SIOUX CITY, Iowa –The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-7 GPAC, 6-13) lost 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-16) to College of St. Mary (Neb.) (3-4 GPAC, 12-8), Friday night at the Newman Flanagan Center.

In the first set, Briar Cliff got off to a 10-6 lead.  St. Mary went on a 9-3 burst to lead 15-13.

Down 19-16, sophomore Aliyah Basham smashed the ball down the middle to make it 19-17.  The Flames took the next six points to finish the set.

In the second set, the Chargers came out strong getting to a 9-4 lead off a kill from senior Kiersten Baker.  CSM began to chip away tying the set at 18-18.

From there the teams traded points.  Basham found the back corner to close the gap to 21-20.  St. Mary's scored four in a row to take the set.

In the third set, the Flames jumped out 8-3 and looked to be in charge at 14-9.  BCU started to fight back.

Briar Cliff scored four straight to make it 14-13.  CSM forged ahead 18-14 before the Chargers began their comeback.

Basham found the line to start a string of four straight points to lead 23-21.  St. Mary cut it to 23-22 before Basham had back-to-back kills to take the set.

In the fourth set, the Flames looked to have it wrapped up with a 16-9 lead.  Sophomore Emma Brenelli smashed the ball down the pipe.

That started a 7-3 run to close the gap to 18-16.  That was as close as BCU could get.

For Briar Cliff, Basham finished the night with 14 kills.  Defensively, Junior Avery Beller had 22 digs, her 20th straight double-digit dig match.

For College of St. Mary, Azaria Green had 16 kills and Grace Werner added 12 kills.

Briar Cliff remains home, Saturday, Oct. 5 taking on Mount Marty.  The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
