CHARGERS DROP HEARTBREAKERS TO MUSTANGS

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Junior Karina Cupples had six hits as The Briar Cliff University softball team (5-7 GPAC, 17-16) lost 8-7 and 5-4 to Morningside (9-5 GPAC, 15-20), Saturday afternoon at the Jensen Complex.

Game - 1
In the first inning, senior Kylee Lukes hit a ball that was misplayed, and she ended up at third base.  Junior Karis Gifford singled to score Lukes and aggressive running put her at second.

Following a passed ball, Gifford scored on a single from junior Kylie Wilhelms.  Morningside scored in the bottom of the first.

Heading into the fourth inning, the Chargers were down 5-3.  BCU took advantage of two errors to score twice and make it 5-5.

In the fifth inning, two hits and a walk loaded the bases with one out.  Junior Kieya Belmont ripped a double to drive in two runs, putting Briar Cliff up 7-5.

Morningside scored twice in the bottom half to tie the game up at 7-7.  The Mustangs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

For Briar Cliff, Cupples had three hits and scored twice while Belmont had two hits and drove in two runs.  Senior Bella Valdez (1-2) gave up seven hits, four runs with three earned, walked two and struck out one in 4.7 innings.

For Morningside, Bralen Biddlecome (5-5) gave up nine hits, seven runs with three earned, walked three and struck out four in seven innings.

Game – 2
In second inning, sophomore Hailey Yon singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a single by freshman Skylar Bainter.

A fielder's choice made Yon the first run of the nightcap.  Morningside scored twice in the fourth inning to take the lead.

In the fifth inning, the Chargers used two hits and a walk to score a run and make it 2-2.  The Mustangs once again scored two runs to take the lead at 4-2.

In the sixth inning, Cupples singled, stole second and moved to third on head's up running.  A ground out scored Cupples to make it 4-3.

Lukes got hit by a pitch and moved to second on a passed ball.  A single from Gifford had runners at the corners.

Senior Aubrey Chichurka laced a single to left field to score Lukes and tie it up.  It was heartbreak again as Morningside scored in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

For Briar Cliff, Cupples had three hits and Gifford and Yon had two hits apiece.  Junior Georgia Krohn (8-5) gave up 11 hits, five runs, walked one and struck out two in 6.3 innings.

For Morningside, Morgan Secora (8-6) gave up nine hits, four runs, walked three and struck out five in seven innings.

Briar Cliff is home, Tuesday, Apr. 16 playing Doane.  The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
