The Charger softball team earned their first win under Head Coach TJ Eadus, taking down Grandview 4-3 at the ASB Dome in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Â
Georgia Krohn threw a complete game, recording four strikeouts and only allowing two earned runs. The top of the batting order got things rolling for the Cliff offensively, as
Karis Gifford and
Kylee Lukes each recorded two hits.
Â
"Great way to start the season with a win. Dominate performance by Krohn on the mound and Cain behind the plate," said Eadus. "Gifford and Lukes led the offensive charge with multiple hits."
Â
Gifford in the top of the first led off the game with a triple.
Karina Cupples drove her in on an RBI single to give BCU the early lead. Lukes followed up with a triple to center field, driving in Cupples.
Â
In the top of the second,
Rylee Cain scored on an infield error to put the Cliff on top 3-0. In the third inning,
Aubrey Chichurka placed a sac-bunt to move Lukes and
Kylie Wilhelms to second and third with one out. Krohn drew a walk to load up the bases the next at-bat.
Kieya Belmont in her plate appearance put the ball in play and allowed Lukes to score on a fielder's choice.
Â
The Vikings would not shy away, as they cut the lead to two in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
In the final inning, the Cliff clung on to a 4-3 lead. The Vikings led off with a single to put the tying run on base. In the next at-bat, a grounder was hit to Belmont at third, who scooped it and fired it to first for the out. Wilhelm from first fired it to
Skylar Bainter at second for the tag to complete the double play. Krohn forced a pop-fly in the final at-bat to preserve the victory.
