The Chargers dropped their double header against NCAA Division two University of Nebraska-Kearney 8-7 and 7-5 Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 – L, 8-7
In the top of the first,
Karis Gifford drew a walk followed by a
Karina Cupples single to centerfield put runners on first and second for the Cliff.
Kylee Lukes in the next at-bat belted a three-run shot to right field to put the Cliff on top 3-0.
Jalyn Yakey's RBI single added another run to close out the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Luke blasted her second three-run shot, this time to left field as the Chargers led 7-2. The Lopers went deep in the bottom of the fourth, benefiting from a two-run shot to cut the lead to three.
The Chargers in extra innings put
Kieya Belmont in scoring position after Gifford laid down a sac-bunt. Cupples singled to right field drove in Belmont to give BCU a 8-7 lead.
The Lopers in the bottom of the inning scored off two Charger errors to steal game one.
Lukes went two-for-four with six RBIs and drew one walk. Cupples went three-for-four with an RBI.
Jalyn Yakey and
Jessica James both recorded a hit.
Game 2 – L, 7-5
Briar Cliff found themselves in an early 7-0 hole in the first half of game two. The Charger offense got a little momentum, plating two runs.
Kylie Wilhelms RBI single to center field and Cupples RBI-double to center field drove in the Chargers first runs.
In the top of the sixth, Lukes again, went deep, another three-run shot to cut the Lopers lead to 7-5.
With two outs and runners at the corners, Cupples fell to strikes and the late Charger rally was halted.
In relief,
Grace Batcheller pitched 5.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits.
The Chargers slide to 4-5, and will travel spring break to play eight games in Tucson, Arizona. On Monday March 4, the Chargers will take on Valley City State and Mayville State.
