Chargers Round Up Mustangs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Graduate student Matthew Stilwill had a double-double as the Briar Cliff University men's basketball team (2-2) beat Mount Mercy (1-1) 82-78 in overtime, Wednesday night at the Hennessey Rec Center.

Briar Cliff started off quickly.  Freshman Jaxson Wingert hit a driving layup to put the Chargers up 12-5 at the 14:05 mark.

Mount Mercy ran off an 11-3 run to lead 16-15 with 9:03 to go.  BCU and the Mustangs went back-and-forth over the next five minutes.  Briar Cliff went on a 25-14 run over the last four minutes to lead 40-30 at halftime.

In the second half, Stilwill hit a pair of free throws to put the Chargers up 42-32 at the 18:46 mark.  Mount Mercy crept back into the game with a 14-4 run to make it 46-46 with 15:55 to go.

It was a battle the rest of the half with nine lead changes and nine ties.  Junior Wil Lugar slammed the ball home to put BCU up 73-71 at the 1:08 mark.  The Mustangs hit two free throws with four seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Mount Marty put pressure on Briar Cliff, taking a 78-75 lead with 2:22 to go.  Junior Blake Sindelar converted two charity tosses to close to 78-77 at the 1:50 mark.

Stilwill turned a hard 3-point play (bucket and free throw) to put the Chargers up 80-78 with 1:29 left.  Stilwill grabbed a rebound and hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to seal the game.

The Chargers pulled down 30 defensive rebounds to 13 offensive boards for Mount Marty.  BCU did a solid job on the perimeter allowing MMU to shoot just 32.4% on 3-pointers.

"I'm really proud of the way the guys found a way tonight. I thought we showed some resolve and toughness in the second half.  Matt (Stilwill) had a big night for us with a double-double.  I thought we got some great defensive production from our bench.  Mount Mercy is a tough place to win. It was great to see our team battle adversity and get the win."

For Briar Cliff, Stilwill had 34 points, 10 rebounds (nine defensive), four steals, shot 11-of-13 from the line and hit three triples.  Wingert had 12 points and graduate student Jamison Helmers scored 11 with three treys.

For Mount Mercy, Jaxson Fried had 20 points.

Briar Cliff returns home, Monday, Nov. 11 taking on Mayville State.  The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
