The Charger football team fell to the Lancers of Mount Marty in the first edition of the Catholic Cup Saturday evening 36-21 on Memorial Field.
The Chargers found themselves in a 14-0 point hole early. The Chargers got on the board midway through the second, using a nine-play 73-yard drive capped off by a 10-yard strike from
Brock Saya to Jaiden-Aavery Stowers. The Lancers returned the PAT try to take a 16-6 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, Saya found
Steven Whiting for his second touchdown of the night on a two-yard pass.
Saya found Stowers for their second hookup of the contest in the fourth quarter, Saya escaped pressure and rolled left and found Stowers in the endzone.
Cory Carignan led the Chargers with 93 yards receiving on four catches including a 48-yard deep ball.
Matthew Mason led the team in rushing with 72 yards on 18 attempts.
Chase Thomas chipped in 26 yards on six carries.
Saya finished the contest going 17-for-28 for 231 yards and three touchdowns.
Brett Tinker had a busy day on the defensive side of the ball, recording a team-high 12 tackles.
The Cliff will return to Memorial Field next Saturday, as they play host to the Warriors of Midland. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
