Briar Cliff Meets Broncos Head-On

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-12 GPAC, 6-18) lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-22) to Hastings (6-5 GPAC, 12-8), Saturday afternoon at the Newman Flanagan Center.

In the first set, Hastings got out to a 12-5 lead and looked to be in control.  Briar Cliff began to find its rhythm on the court.

Freshman Aubrey Hoeft completely stuffed the Bronco hitter.  That closed a 14-9 run to make it 21-19.  Hastings scored three in a row to effectively end the set.

In the second set, the Broncos got out 11-6 and were in cruise control the rest of the way.

In the third set, the Chargers were aggressive from the start.  Senior Taylin Boettcher picked up an ace to put BCU up 9-6.

Hastings went on an 11-3 run to go up 17-12.  Briar Cliff refused to go down without a fight.

Sophomore Emma Brenelli smashed the ball off the block.  That cut the gap to one, 22-21.  The Broncos had to fight hard for the final three points to end the match.

Briar Cliff head coach Lindsey Weatherford
We played hard the entire match.  I thought our blocking was really strong.  Taryn (Nothem) played an excellent match today. She had several key blocks and terminated at a high rate.  Kiersten (Baker) has been a consistent terminator all season and had an excellent match on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball."

For Briar Cliff, senior Kiersten Baker had seven kills, four block assists and hit .438 while senior Taryn Nothem had four block assists.  Junior Avery Beller had 28 digs, her 25th consecutive double-digit dig match.

For Hastings, Majesta Valasek had 13 kills and Miriam Miller had 31 digs.

Briar Cliff are home Wednesday, Oct. 23 taking on Northwestern (Iowa).  The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
