Chargers Fall To Raiders

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-13 GPAC, 6-19) lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-17) to #1 Northwestern (Iowa) (13-0 GPAC, 24-0), Wednesday evening at the Newman Flanagan Center.

In the first set, Briar Cliff came out swinging.  Senoir Taryn Nothem crushed the ball down the line.  That put the Chargers up 6-2.

Northwestern reeled off seven straight points to lead 9-6.  BCU came back with a 4-1 run.

Sophomore Aliyah Basham smacked the ball off the block to tie it at 10-10.  A 7-1 burst by Northwestern turned the tide. 

In the second set, the Raiders started out quickly, getting up 4-1.  Briar Cliff charged right back into the set.

Sophomore Emma Brenelli got a solo block which started a run of three straight points to put the Chargers up 6-5.

It went back-and-forth until 8-8.  Northwestern went on a 7-3 run to effectively take the set.

In the third set, everything was falling for the Raiders as they got up 14-2.  BCU was not ready to have the night end.

Basham found the back corner that closed off a tremendous 10-1 run by Briar Cliff.  That made it 15-12.  Northwestern scored four straight to take control.

For Briar Cliff, junior Avery Beller had 17 digs, her 26th consecutive double-digit dig match.

For Northwestern, Jazlin Douma had 16 kills and 11 digs.

Briar Cliff heads across town, Wednesday, Oct. 30 taking on Morningside.  The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
