Chargers Fall To Defenders

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (0-11 GPAC, 6-17) lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-12) to Dordt (7-4 GPAC, 13-9), Wednesday night at De Witt Gym.

In the first set, Briar Cliff came out strong, scoring the first five points of the game.  The Chargers pushed the lead to 7-2.

Dordt chipped away and closed to 10-9.  Sophomore Emma Brenelli smashed the ball down the line.  That started a run of four straight points to make it 14-9.

The Defenders pulled out a 7-2 run to make it 16-16.  BCU scored three in a row to take the lead back at 19-16.  Dordt got the next seven points to take control.

In the second set, it was the Defenders who came out on fire pulling ahead 10-3.  Briar Cliff took a deep breath and began to fire back.

The Chargers forced an error to finish a 12-7 run to cut the gap to two, 17-15.  Dordt scored three points in a row to effectively end the set.

In the third set, BCU and the Defenders went back-and-forth early on.  Freshman Aubrey Hoeft and junior Isabelle Lenz stuffed the hitter.

That made it 6-4, Dordt.  The Defenders went on an 11-3 run to seal the match.

For Briar Cliff, junior Avery Beller had 15 digs, her 24th consecutive double-digit dig match.

For Dordt, Tarren Spartz had 11 kills and Ellie Dokter added 10.

Briar Cliff begins a four-game homestand, Saturday, Oct. 19 taking on Hastings.  The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
