The Cliff fall short of second half comeback against Midland

The Charger football team nearly erased a 21-point deficit in the second half, falling to the Midland Warriors 45-30 on Memorial Field Saturday afternoon.

Kymani Fleurme tied a school record of three receiving touchdowns in the contest, hauling in four catches for 141 yards.

After finding themselves in a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter, Brock Saya connected with Fleurme for a 76-yard deep ball to cut the lead to one possession.

Early in the second quarter, the Chargers used a six-play 47-yard drive to get to the Midland 21. Saya's pass on third down fell incomplete and the Chargers' had to settle for a Jacob Schroeder field goal to the lead 14-10.

Midway through the third, Saya found Cory Carignan on a deep ball down the left side for a 64-yard score on third-and-two. Carignan broke two tackles on the play.

Late in the third quarter, Briar Cliff's defense stepped up on a critical fourth-and-one on their own 26-yard line. Max Rascon Jr. stuffed Midland's Tyson Denkert for no gain and gave the Charger offense the ball back.

BCU capitalized, as Saya threw a deep shot to Carignan for a 43-yard hook up. A seven-yard rush from Matthew Mason set up a 24-yard strike to Fleurme to cut the lead 31-24.

Fleurme hauled in his third touchdown of the day late in the fourth quarter, a 29-yard strike from Saya.

Saya went 13-for-28 for 321 yards and four passing touchdowns in the contest. Carignan finished the contest with three catches for 123 yards and a score. Seven different Chargers recorded a reception in the contest.

Carlos Lopez finished the contest with seven tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and a sack. Kael Forsyth led the team in tackles with 13. Max Rason Jr. recorded eight tackles and a tackle-for-loss.

The Chargers will prepare to take on cross-town rival Morningside next Saturday for the Battle of the Saddle at Elwood Olsen Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
