In the first game on the newly turfed Faber Field, the Briar Cliff men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory of Hastings. The Chargers move to the top of the GPAC standings with a 7-2-1 (4-0-1 GPAC) record.
"It's a big 3 points for us and we fully deserved them," said head coach Teren Schuster. "The boys worked really hard and were brave throughout the 90 minutes. I'm proud of the way our team played but we now switch our focus to Doane away on Saturday where we need three points."
Hastings scored first in the 12
th minute of play. Hastings sent a free kick from near the halfway line, which was redirected off a header and to the foot of Joe Vokins who beat the BC keeper.
Looking for the equalizer, the Chargers drew a foul when
Andrew Buchanan was tripped up.
Pablo Garcia-Pola Coppen perfectly curled the free kick right to
Daniel Ehlin for a header goal.
The Chargers scored the game winning goal just four minutes after they equalized. Nicolas Aanensen Karlson received the ball in the midfield and lobbed over the Bronco backline to a streaking Buchanan. Against a charging Hastings goalie, Buchanan chipped the ball up high, over the keeper, and into the back of the net.
The Broncos nearly tied the match in the 70
th minute as Sandro Rubio's free kick hit off the crossbar.
The Chargers back line limited to the Broncos to just six shots in the match, with only two being on frame.
Hjalmar Nilsson made one save in his 90 minutes in net.
Briar Cliff totaled nine shots on goal and were led by Karlsen's three shots on frame and Buchanan's two.
The Chargers will travel for their next match against Doane on Saturday. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Crete, Nebraska.
