Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

CHARGERS BATTLE, FALL IN FOUR TO HASTINGS

The Briar Cliff volleyball team battled, but fell in four sets against Hastings Saturday in Hastings, Nebraska.

"Today I thought our team bounced back from last night's loss with positive energy and a focused mindset. That showed in set one," said head coach Lindsey Weatherford. "Hastings made some adjustments in sets two and three that we didn't respond well to, however we were able to stay close with them and score points."

BC started the match strong against Hastings but fell behind as the Broncos took a lead of 20-13 which forced a Chargers timeout. Briar Cliff switched the momentum and scored eight unanswered points with two kills from Sami Wasmund who partnered with Reese Strouth for a block. The run also featured three service aces from Olivia Corey. The Chargers took the first set with back-to-back kills from Filimaua Afatia, 25-23.

The Chargers fell in the second set, as they hit .139, with 12 kills on 36 attempts. Briar Cliff were able to climb up from a 9-17 deficient, but the Broncos capitalized on BC errors and secured the set 25-20.

The third set was evenly matched between the Chargers and Broncos, going back and forth with each team recording runs of three or more. Both teams secured 13 kills in the third set, but the Broncos took the set 25-21.

In set four, Hastings hit a match best .308 with 18 kills and protected the net with three blocks securing the 3-1 win, 25-19. The Chargers made a mini run in the middle of the set with five straight points. Corey tallied an ace and Strouth and Wasmund recorded two blocks together.

"We made too many serving errors for this match to go our way, however I'm proud of the determination we showed and how well our blockers performed today," said Weatherford.

Wasmund led the Chargers with 11 kills, six blocks, two aces and a .360 hitting percentage. Toria Andre led BC with seven blocks and had seven kills (.211).

Avery Beller was steady on defense with 16 digs, with Jaice Johnson next with 10. Olivia Corey and Yenne Schepers had 21 and 16 assists overall. Corey totaled four aces in the match.

The Chargers will host Dakota Wesleyan Tuesday at the Newman Flanagan Center. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
