The Briar Cliff volleyball team fell to Dakota State Saturday 3-0 at the Red Raider Invite in Orange City, Iowa. The Chargers made last pushed in the first and third sets but were unable to secure a set.
Toria Andre led the Cliff in the first set with four kills, while
Avery Beller recorded seven digs. Dakota State was first to build a lead of four or more points, 13-9, but following a Briar Cliff timeout, the Chargers tied the game at 15-15.
Yenne Schepers tallied an ace and assisted a kill from
Reese Strouth during a 4-0 Charger run that tied the game. The Trojans answered with a six-point swing to take a 21-16 lead. Following three straight Charger points, the Trojans closed out set one, 25-20, with back-to-back points.
Kills from
Filimaua Afatia and
Georgianna Wenzel and two aces from
Olivia Corey opened a 4-0 Charger lead to start set two. A kill from Andre, followed by a Dakota State error brought the Cliff within four points, but fell 25-20 in set two.
Dakota State started quick in set three, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Trailing 16-24 the Chargers looked to mount a comeback effort starting with a kill from
Makynna Snow.
Sami Wasmund and
Kiersten Baker teamed up for a block, and two points later Wasmund put down a kill.
Avery Beller recorded a service ace to cut the lead to 21-24, but the Trojans would close out the match, 25-21.
Andre had a team-high 10 kills on a .292 hitting percentage. She was followed by Wasmund who recorded six kills at a .429 clip and Strouth who tallied six kills.
Beller led the Chargers for the second game in a row with 17 digs. Schepers and Corey each tallied 14 assists, and Corey added 12 digs and three aces.
The Chargers will face Valley City State next Saturday at 10:00 a.m. for the Charger Invite.
