CHARGERS DROP PAIR OF GAMES TO JAMESTOWN

The Briar Cliff baseball team dropped a pair of games to Jamestown on Sunday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Field. The Chargers tallied 13 hits across the doubleheader.

Game 1 – L, 3-4
Game one looked to be a pitcher's duel early in the game as both teams were kept scoreless in the first three frames.

Briar Cliff found the first run of the game in the fourth inning behind back-to-back doubles from Quentin Evers and Jake Allen.

The Chargers would extend their advantage in the top of the fifth inning. Cyler Melvin led off with a double to center field and was driven in on an RBI single up the middle from Jared Sitzmann.

The Cliff's defense was rock solid through the first five innings as they were led by a very efficient Brett Sitzmann and his nine strikeouts.

BC added another run in the sixth to push their lead to 3-0. Walter Hunt doubled down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Pinch runner Jake Chronic advanced to third on a wild pitch and was batted in on a sacrifice flyout to center field from Matthew Hmielewski.

Jamestown would respond with a big inning of their own. After an leadoff single and walk, the Jimmies formulated a double-steal to put both runners in scoring position where they would both be driven in to cut the deficit to 2-3. The Jimmies knotted the game up at 3-3 in the sixth inning off an RBI single to center field.

The Chargers couldn't get on base in the final inning as Jamestown kept the momentum. Despite making no mistakes in the first six innings, the Chargers suffered two errors in the final frame as the Jimmies managed to push across the game-winning run on a popup to short left field. The Chargers fell in game one 3-4.

Briar Cliff out-hit Jamestown 7-4 in game one. Jared Sitzmann went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and carded an RBI. Jake Allen tallied one hit to go with one RBI as three other Chargers recorded hits.

Brett Sitzmann was electric on the mound for Briar Cliff. Sitzmann went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out 10.

Game 2 – L, 1-7
Game two started out similar to game one as both pitchers shut down the offenses. Hmielewski got the start for the Chargers and tallied six strikeouts through the first four innings.

Jamestown hopped on the board first in the fifth inning behind a double and an RBI single. The Charger defense prevented further damage by recording a pop out and a flyout.

Allen was hit by a pitch, Matthew Delgado reach on an error and Cam Riemer walked to load the bases with only one out in the sixth inning. Easton Cone was then hit by a pitch to tally an RBI and even the score up at 1-1.

After a scoreless seventh, the Jimmies started a rally. After back-to-back singles and a costly Charger error, the bases were loaded with no outs. Jordan Singleton found the biggest swing of the day, carding a grand-slam home run to right field to grant the Jimmies the late 5-1 advantage. Jamestown wasn't done just yet as they tallied two more runs on three hits to end the scoring at 7-1.

Hunt led the way for the Chargers with two hits. Four other Chargers carded one hit apiece.

Hmielewski was a gem on the bump for BC. He threw 7.0 innings, allowing only one run on five hits, while striking out eight.

The Chargers continue their GPAC slate when they face Dordt in a makeup doubleheader on Tuesday at Bishop Mueller Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
