The Briar Cliff baseball team swept Hastings in a doubleheader in Monday afternoon in Hastings, Nebraska. The Chargers were fueled by great pitching from
Kyler Steinborn and
Matthew Hmielewski.
"We received two outstanding pitching performances", said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "It's extremely hard to win at Hastings and I'm proud of the way our guys fought back after a tough day yesterday."
The Chargers now lead the GPAC with seven shutouts on the season.
Game 1 – W, 8-0
The Chargers jumped on the board first in game one with three runs on two hits and a costly Bronco error.
Trey Rogers roped a single and was followed by a drawn walk from
Quentin Evers as
Walter Hunt was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs,
Cam Riemer laced a two-RBI double to right field and
Jake Chronic reach on a crucial error to push another run across. In the middle of the first, the Chargers held an early 3-0 lead.
The Chargers added another run in the top of the second. Rogers reached first on an error, while Lange and Hunt drew walks to load the bases.
Jake Allen was hit by a pitch and was awarded an RBI to push the score to 4-0.
Steinborn found his rhythm on the mound, striking out two in the bottom of the second.
Briar Cliff kept the scoring going as they tallied one run on one hit and another Bronco error in the top of the third frame. Chronic led off reaching on an error and was followed by a single to right field by
Devon Farrell. Chronic would then come around to score on a dropped third strike to extend the BC lead to five runs.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Charger bats got hot again. Chronic led off with a single and was immediately followed by a double from
Easton Cone. Farrell tallied an RBI sacrifice fly out, while Evers carded an RBI single to push the Chargers' lead even further to 7-0.
In the top of the sixth, Allen was hit by a pitch to get the momentum up and running. Courtesy runner Hmielewski stole second and scampered to third on a wild pitch with only one out. Cone put the ball in play at the perfect, recording an RBI ground out to extend the lead to eight runs.
Steinborn was still in his groove late in game two, finding two more strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth frame to keep the Broncos scoreless.
Austin Carter came in to slam the door in the bottom of the seventh. Carter tallied two strikeouts en route to a combined complete-game seven-inning shutout.
The Chargers tallied six hits in game one. Six different Chargers garnered one hit each as Riemer led the way with two RBIs.
Steinborn nearly went the distance, throwing 6.0 innings, allowing six hits whilst striking out eight. Carter closed out game one with two strikeouts.
Game Two – W, 2-0
Game two was a pitcher's duel between BC's Hmielewski and Hastings' Markus Miller. In the first frame, Rogers singled as Lange was hit by a pitch to a put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Miller and the Hastings defense buckled down to get three consecutive fly outs and escape the threat.
The Chargers put two runners on base again in the second inning after a dropped-third-strike passed ball and a single from
Easton Cone. The Broncos defense evaded the pressure, picking off a runner at first to end the frame.
Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the second, the Broncos failed to convert. Hmielewski and the Chargers tallied two fly outs and a ground out in the inning to keep the score even at 0-0 heading into the third.
Both teams were trading hits but couldn't push any runs across the plate. In the third, Rogers tallied another single for the Chargers as two Broncos tallied hits. Again, the score was stuck at 0-0.
After a scoreless fourth frame, the Charger offense threatened in the fifth. With two outs, Rogers and Lange lined back-to-back singles as Evers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Broncos managed to escape the pressure once again with a fly out.
In the top of the sixth, the Blue and Gold found a runner in scoring position with only one out as Sitzmann roped a double. Miller carded back-to-back fly outs to keep the Chargers scoreless once again.
The Chargers defense was holding strong as well. Hmielewski found a strikeout and forced two routine plays in the bottom of the sixth to push the game into the final frame with the score still at 0-0.
In the top of the seventh, the Chargers finally struck gold. Rogers led off with a single and was advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt from Lange. Evers singled as Caleb St. cyr was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Riemer due up. Riemer laced a two-RBI double through the left side to give the Charger the long awaited 2-0 lead.
The Broncos found a lone hit in the bottom of the seventh, but Hmielewski slammed the door with two strikeouts in the frame to award him the complete-game shutout as the Chargers were victorious in game two 2-0.
The Chargers tallied nine hits in game two and were led by Rogers, who went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with one run scored. Five other Chargers tallied one hit each.
Hmielewski was efficient on the mound, pitching a complete-game seven-inning shutout to earn the sweep over the Broncos and the Chargers' second shutout of the day. Hmielewski allowed five hits and no runs, while striking out four.
The Chargers return home to face Grand View in a single nine-inning contest Tuesday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
