CHARGERS ROLL TO VICTORY OVER GRAND VIEW

The Briar Cliff baseball rolled to a 13-3 victory over Grand View in a nine-inning contest on Tuesday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Complex.
 
"It was a great team win today", said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "We were able to get a lot of guys in the game and they produced when their number was called."
 
The Chargers are now riding a three-game win streak prior to their final four-game home stand on Saturday and Sunday.
 
Game 1 – W, 13-3 – 8 Innings
Carter Schorg set the tempo of the game early as he carded two strikeouts and a flyout on 10 pitches in the top of the first.
 
The Charger offense looked to be putting pressure on the after a lead-off single from Trey Rogers. The Grand View defense buckled down and got out of the inning with a ground ball double play.
 
The Vikings found the first runs of the game in the second frame. After a lead-off pop-out, Grandview put together back-to-back doubles and an RBI single to push two runs across the plate. Despite a Charger error, Schorg managed to end the momentum with a strikeout and a routine ground ball. Midway through the second, the Vikings pulled out to an early 2-0 lead. 
 
In the bottom half of the second, the Blue and Gold worked their way onto the bases as Cyler Melvin and Jake Chronic drew back-to-back walks with two outs. The Chargers were unable to convert, leaving the score 2-0 in favor of GVU heading into the third.
 
Following the scoreless third inning, the Vikings added to their lead behind a lead-off walk and two-out RBI single up the middle. With three and a half innings in the books, the Chargers found themselves in a three-run deficit.
 
The Vikings threatened again in the top of the fifth. GVU placed runners and first and third with two outs thanks to two singles. Schorg forced a ground out and earned a strikeout to end the top half of the fifth.
 
In the bottom of the fifth frame, the Chargers got things rolling offensively. Chronic drew a lead-off walk as Cone and Rogers were both hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out. Jared Sitzmann found the timely hit that the Cliff needed as he roped a two-RBI single through the left side to inch BC closer 2-3. Connor Lange also found an RBI single to even up the score at 3-3. 
 
The Vikings pieced a few base runners together in the top of the sixth behind two drawn walks and a costly Charger error to load the bases with one out. Schorg worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
 
The Charger offense unloaded in the bottom of the sixth as Riemer and Melvin led off drawing walks and Chronic was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cone then tallied an RBI sacrifice fly out to right field, while pinch hitter Matthew Delgado grounded a two-RBI single up the middle. Sitzmann, Lange and Evers also tallied RBI hits to extend the BC lead to 9-3.
 
The Vikings loaded the bases again in the seventh, but Cody Salker and the Charger defense evaded the pressure with two ground out and a tough catch by Sitzmann in left field.
 
The Blue and Gold added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh with three runs on a lone hit. Melvin and pinch hitter Drew Peterson garnered walks in the inning, while Chronic and pinch hitter Walter Hunt were hit by pitches. The Vikings suffered a crucial error en route to the Chargers' three-run inning. With two innings to play, the Chargers held a late 12-3 lead.
 
After keeping the Vikings out of the scoring column in the top of the eighth, the Chargers pieced together some baserunners in the bottom of the inning. Melvin, along with pinch hitters Jake Remar and Zakk Evers, drew walks to load the bases with no outs. Pinch hitter Peyton Grant laced an RBI single over the center fielder's grasp to end the game in the eighth inning in run-rule fashion 13-3.
 
Sitzmann paced the Charger offense with three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Lange followed just behind with two hits and two RBIs as four other Chargers tallied one hit each.
 
Schorg went 5.0 innings on the bump, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out a team-high six opponent batters. Nelson Cone, Salker and Alex Kremer each pitched one full inning in relief. Cone carded two strikeouts.
 
The Chargers stay home when they host the Morningside Mustangs in a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday at Bishop Mueller Complex. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., while Sunday's is scheduled for 12 p.m.
