The Briar Cliff baseball team pushed their record to 11-3 as they swept LSU Alexandria 6-0 and 7-4 in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. A seventh-inning surge of six runs granted the Chargers the win in game two.
Â
"It was a tremendous job by all 31 guys to sweep a really good baseball team", said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "Holding that talented of lineup to four runs in the three-game series is a major feat. We face two more really good ball clubs over the next two days to complete our trip."
Â
The Chargers are now on a seven-game winning streak.
Â
Game 1 – W, 6-0
The Chargers jumped on the board early scoring one run in the first. BC tallied three hits as the Generals committed an error to give the Cliff an early 1-0 lead.
Â
After allowing two hits in the bottom of the first, the Charger defense buckled down by catching a runner stealing and making two routine plays, stranding both runners and getting out of the first inning unscathed.
Â
Despite suffering two walks and a hit batter,
Ryan Riddles managed to find three strike outs to end the second frame.
Â
After two more scoreless innings, Briar Cliff rallied in the fourth inning. Five Chargers carded hits with three singles and back-to-back doubles. After back-to-back singles,
Devon Farrell walked to load the bases.
Trey Rogers lined a three-RBI double to center field, clearing the bases.
Cam Riemer traded spots with Rogers, roping a double to left field and extending the BC lead to 6-0.
Â
The scoring would end 6-0 as the Briar Cliff pitching staff of Riddle and
Austin Carter kept LSU Alexandria off the board for the second straight game.
Â
Riddle picked up the win on the bump going 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven. Carter slammed the door pitching the final two innings allowing no hits and striking out a pair.
Â
The Chargers recorded 10 hits in game one. Riemer,
Connor Lange and
Quentin Evers led the way with two hits apiece. Rogers,
Jake Allen,
Jake Chronic and
Jared Sitzmann all found one hit as well. Rogers tallied three of the Chargers' six RBI's.
Â
Briar Cliff held the advantage in runners left on base (4-12), hits (10-3) and RBI's (6-0).
Â
Game 2 – W, 7-4
The Chargers found themselves down early after a lone General run in the bottom half of the first. The Generals collected one hit and the Chargers committed an error, giving LSU Alexandria the 1-0 advantage.
Â
LSUA added two more runs in the second behind a hit batter and a home run to right field.
Â
The game was in a stalemate until the Chargers found a run in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back doubles by Riemer and Lange, the Chargers now trailed 1-3 and needed some seventh inning heroics.
Â
Briar Cliff struck gold in the seventh inning, pushing six runs across the plate. In the frame, the Chargers recorded three walks and three hits. The Chargers tied the game at 3-3 with a Riemer two-RBI single to left field and added one more off an RBI single from Evers, but the biggest hit came off the bat of
Cyler Melvin. Melvin launched a three-run homer to center field, giving BC the big 7-3 lead.
Â
The Generals saw themselves in a comeback situation in the bottom of the seventh. LSUA managed to push one run across the plate in the final frame, but it proved to be too little as the BC lead was too large. BC went on to win their 11th game of the season 7-4, completing the three-game weekend sweep of LSU Alexandria.
Â
Matt Hmielewski snagged the win on the mound going 6.0 innings allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out four.
Rylan Aamold closed out the game for the Chargers, allowing one hit and one run.
Â
The Cliff tallied seven hits in game two. Riemer paced way with two hits, two runs and two RBI's. Five other Chargers recorded one hit apiece. Melvin had a team-high three RBIs in game two.
Â
The Charger baseball team returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Louisiana Christian in a single seven-inning contest in Pineville, Louisiana. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
