Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

STILWILL’S GAME WINNER LIFTS BC OVER DOANE

With a spot in the GPAC Postseason Tournament on the line and the score tied at 75-75, Matthew Stilwill delivered for the Briar Cliff men's basketball team. Stilwill's floater as time expired lifted the Chargers past Doane and into the No. 7 seed in next week's conference tournament.

"Big win tonight is an understatement! It was intense game all the way through," said head coach Mark Svagera. "I'm incredibly proud of our guys for finding a way on the road. We had multiple guys make big plays, capped off by Matt's! We're excited to keep the season going next week!"

The Chargers had major contributions from multiples players in Stilwill's 17 points and game winning shot, Conner Groves' 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting off the bench and Quinn Vesey's 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.

With a postseason berth at stake for both teams, the contest was tightly contested from wire-to-wire as the lead never went past six points. Trailing by five with 8:52 left in the first half, the Chargers would outscore Doane 22-11 to take a six-point lead at half. Six different Chargers scored during that span, led by Groves' eight points.

Groves knocked down the Cliff's only two 3-pointers of the half, as they found success in the lane with 18 points in the paint. BC shot 55.6% from the field in the opening 20 minutes and won the rebounding battle 16-13. While the score stayed close throughout the half, the lead only changed hands on three occasions.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair with lead changing 18 total times and the score tying 12 times.

After scoring two points in the first half, Stilwill found his groove after the intermission, scoring 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The Tigers turned to Alec Oberhauser, who scored 19 of his game high 31 points in the second half on 8-for-10 shooting.

The Chargers shot an even 50% from the floor and made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe by going 15-for-17.

Doane put up 45 points in the second half on 68.0% shooting and were 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

A layup from Brady Timm gave the Tigers a one-point lead with 1:33 left, but the score was quickly tied after Vesey split a pair of free throws. Timm missed a go-ahead 3-pointer with 19 seconds and following a BC timeout, the ball was in Stilwill hands who drove in the lane and knocked down a contested floater as time expired.

The Chargers will face the No. 2 seeded Mustangs of Morningside Wednesday in Allee Gym at 7 p.m. in the first round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament.
