The Briar Cliff volleyball won the first set over No. 12 Jamestown but would fall 3-1 in the Newman Flanagan Center Friday night.
Â
"I was particularly pleased with our first set tonight against Jamestown," said head coach
Lindsey Weatherford. "They are a well-trained team and that can be intimidating at times. We really held our own in set one."
Â
The Chargers took the first set by a 25-23 score and notched 11 kills on a .237 hitting percentage, their highest of the night. Briar Cliff nearly played error free, with just two miscues, and took advantage of nine Jimmie errors. After a 5-2 start for the Jimmies, the Chargers scored six straight with
Avery Beller serving to take a three-point lead. The score would tie four times after BC took the lead, but the Chargers would stay in front of the Jimmies for the remainder of the set. Beller closed out the set win with her second service ace.
Â
The Jimmies responded in the second frame with a match high hitting percentage of .400 with 17 kills. The Chargers held a 4-1 early lead, and the score was tied at 13-all, but the Jimmies pulled away late.
Â
"We also knew Jamestown would really get fired up for set two which they did. That momentum carried through the rest of the match," said Weatherford.
Â
Jamestown continued to control the match in the third and fourth sets by hitting .355 and .300. In the fourth set,
Georgianna Wenzel tallied a kill followed by a Jimmie error to pull the Cliff within four, 19-15 as they looked to extend it to a fifth set. Jamestown closed out the match by scoring the final six points.
Â
Toria Andre and
Sami Wasmund led the Cliff with eight kills and three blocks each.
Makynna Snow had a team best .259 hitting percentage and put away seven kills. Wenzel tallied six kills and two blocks.
Â
"I really thought
Makynna Snow did a great job of terminating for us tonight.Â
Toria Andre and
Sami Wasmund were a force at the net on both sides of the ball," said Weatherford. "
Avery Beller really went on a couple great serving runs for us tonight."
Â
Beller recorded team highs with four aces and 16 digs.
Yenne Schepers handed out 22 assists and
Olivia Corey had 12.
Â
The Chargers will hit the head to Mitchell, South Dakota next Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. match against Dakota Wesleyan.
