The Briar Cliff men's soccer team held a 1-0 lead for 76 minutes Wednesday but would surrender a late goal to tie 1-1 with Concordia on Faber Field.
The Chargers remain unbeaten in GPAC play with a 7-0-2 record. The Cliff moved a step closer to a GPAC Regular Season Championship with the draw. With a win in their next match against Midland, the Chargers would secure at least a share of the regular season title.
Briar Cliff pushed the pace early, as
Pablo Garcia-Pola Coppen worked his way down the sideline and sent a cross towards the goal. Coppen's cross bounced off the keeper's hands and bounced in front of the goal once before
Filip Peters buried the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Holding a 1-0 lead late in the second half, Jasper Van Der Molen was tagged with his second yellow card and the Chargers would play a man down for the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs would net the equalizer in the 80
th minute on a corner kick. The pass sailed over the heads of a pair of leaping Bulldogs and Chargers and found the head of Carter Hinman who tied it 1-1.
Following the Bulldog goal, the Chargers were able to limit CUNE to just one more shot, which was saved by
Hjalmar Nilsson.
Both teams took 10 shots in the match with BC putting three on goal to the Bulldogs seven. Concordia were awarded more corner kicks 11-2.
Nilsson made five saves in his 90 minutes in net. Herman Toftevag,
Andrew Buchanan and Peters all put shots on goal for the Cliff.
The Chargers will look to secure a share of the GPAC Regular Season Title at home on Faber Field next Wednesday when they host Midland at 1:00 p.m.
