The Briar Cliff indoor track and field teams competed Saturday at the Mount Marty Opener Meet in Yankton, South Dakota. Six Chargers placed in the top-four in the meet, with Carter Matthews, Hope Wagner and Robert Amaro taking first in their respective events.
"Today was full of ups and downs as you would expect from coming off a break", said head coach Scott Barnes. "Some really good things did happen. Robert Amaro won the 600m and Carter Matthews got his first college victory with a personal best in the 800m. Isabel Sayler had a solid performance taking second and Dominic Archer also took second in the 60m. Hope Wagner had a great day taking first in the shot put, just missing on a season-best throw."
As the lone Charger in the 800m, Carter Matthews posted a personal-best time of 2:03.89 to finish in first place, gathering his first collegiate win. Robert Amaro paced the field in the 600m, leading to a first-place finish with a time of 1:23.00.
Hope Wagner beat out the competition in the shot put, hitting the NAIA 'B' Standard, with her best throw of 13.39m. Wagner continues to inch closer to the NAIA 'A' Standard of 13.45m. In the triple jump, Isabel Sayler posted a jump of 10.39m, good for second place in the competition.
Dominic Archer placed second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 6.97. Archer also finished fourth in the 200m with a time of 23.00.
Kenney Nolan was the last Charger to finish in the top-four, taking fourth place in the one-mile event with a time of 5:03.65.
"We had some good showings for the first meet back from a long Christmas break", said assistant coach Chandler Cork. "It's great to be back, to see the athletes at practice every day and to get back to business for the rest of the year to continue seeing the progress being made. Preparation for SDSU next week continues!"
The Chargers have a quick turnaround as they travel to Brookings, South Dakota on Saturday, January 20 to compete in the SDSU D2 Invitational.
