Chargers bounce back with 3-1 win over Haskell

The Briar Cliff women's volleyball team took a 3-1 win over Haskell Wednesday in Lawrence, Kansas. The Chargers improve to 5-7 on the season.

The Chargers totaled seven solo blocks and eight assisted blocks in the contest, led by Sami Wasmund's five rejections.

"We have really been working this week to refine our blocking scheme," said head coach Lindsey Weatherford. "Our core group of hitters in Sami, Toria and Chloe are really starting to come on strong and score us points on offense!"

With the score tied at 7-7, the Chargers pulled away with an 11-1 run highlighted by three straight aces from Wasmund. Haskell cut the deficit to seven, 22-15 but a kill from Wasmund, assisted by Emma Porter, would give BC set one 25-17.

Chloe Johnson held serve for eight straight points at the start of set two, as the Cliff took an early 8-2 edge. Toria Andre accounted for four points in the run with three blocks and one kill. A four-point swing, fueled by three Chloe Johnson kills and a Porter ace, put BC up 18-9. Georgianna Wenzel ended set two with a kill, assisted by Kanoelani Shadron.

A pair of early runs in set three put Haskell in the lead, but a 5-0 Charger run cut the deficit to two. The Chargers pulled within four points of completing the sweep, but Haskell took set three 25-21.

Briar Cliff scored the first four points of set three and didn't give up the advantage for the entirety of the set. The Chargers extended their lead to 12-4 after a block followed by two kills from Wasmund.

The Chargers were led by Chloe Johnson's 11 kills on a .333 hitting percentage and had 23 digs. Wasmund added seven kills, four aces and five blocks (four solo). Porter handed out 25 assists and had 12 digs, while Shadron had 10 assists.

The Blue and Gold return to GPAC play next Wednesday against Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa.
