Davies airs it out, Chargers down Jimmies 31-25

Behind the arm of quarterback Luke Davies, the Briar Cliff football team earned their first win of the season 31-25 over Jamestown Saturday. Trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter, the Chargers exploded for 21 points in the final 15 minutes to secure the comeback victory.

Davies put together his best performance in the Blue and Gold, totaling 397 passing yards while completing 36-of-46 attempts with four touchdowns. He completed passes to six different receivers and found four different Chargers in the endzone for TDs.

"Extremely proud of our men who never stopped believing," said head coach Shane LaDage. "Luke Davies and our receivers came up with big plays time and time again, and our defense gave us life in key moments. A huge shout out to our coaches who put together a great plan that we executed when it mattered most. Hats off to Jamestown, they are a quality program that does things the right way."

Briar Cliff got on the board first with a 13-play, 90-yard touchdown drive to end the first quarter. Davies completed passes to five different Chargers, including a 39-yard reception to Damarreon Nelson to move the Cliff into Jimmie territory. A touchdown pass to Kobe Johnson capped off the drive and the Cliff took a 7-0 lead.

The Jimmies received the ball after halftime, after taking a 10-7 lead in the second quarter. It didn't take long for the BC defense to get off the field, as Brett Tinker forced a fumble on Jamestown's second play which was recovered by Winston Gassant. The Chargers took advantage of the turnover with a Jonathan Branner 40-yard field goal tying the game at 10-10.

After a Jimmie touchdown in the third quarter, the Chargers answered with back-to-back scores to take a 24-17 lead with 7:55 remaining. Davies found freshman Steven Whiting in the corner of the endzone for his first career BC touchdown, and later found Spencer George for a 39-yard TD. Jamestown answered with a 16-play 90-yard scoring drive and took a one-point lead after converting a two-point conversion.

With 1:29 left on the clock, the Chargers executed a near-perfect two-minute drill. Davies connected with Nelson four times for 54 yards, including the 30-yard game-winning touchdown catch.

Nelson set new career highs with 10 receptions and 125 yards. Johnson totaled 113 yards and his 10 catches were also a new career best. Aaron Okoro added seven catches for 75 yards and George had 53 yards on four receptions.

Brett Tinker and Winston Gassant led the Cliff with 12 tackles apiece. Tinker had eight solo tackles and forced one fumble. MJ Montgomery had six tackles, two sacks and two quarterback hurries. Tulsa Janish and Antonio Brown Jr. combined for five pass breakups, while Christian Balmer added a sack.

The Chargers will hit the road for the first time this season when they face #1 Morningside next Saturday. Battle for the Saddle kicks at 1 p.m. at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
