The Briar Cliff baseball team went 1-1 on the first day of the GPAC Baseball Postseason Tournament Saturday in Seward, Nebraska. BC upset the three-seed Mount Marty 7-6 but fell 3-9 to Northwestern in the second contest of the day.

Game 1 vs Mount Marty – W, 7-6

Quentin Evers reached base in all four of his plate appearances with two hits and twice via error. He crossed home plate four times, tallied three RBIs and smashed two home runs.Â

Jake Allen singled in the first inning, driving in
Cam Riemer for the first run of the game. The Lancers would answer in the bottom half of the inning with one run off Charger pitcher
Jacob Wesselmann.

After
Jared Sitzmann reached base on a bunt, Evers would send his first home run over the left field fence to retake a 3-1 lead. Mount Marty loaded the bases in bottom of the second, and a double down the left field line would clear them as the Lancers took a one-run edge.

Evers would tie the game at 4-4 after scoring on a Lancer wild pitch in the fourth. BC took a two-run edge after
Easton Cone doubled to score one run, and then Cone would cross home after a
Matthew Hmielewski single up the middle. The Lancers would pull back within one with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Leading 6-5 heading into the final frame, Evers' second home run of the day would prove to be the difference as the Cliff took a 7-5 with three outs to go.

The Lancers led off the seventh with a solo home run, cutting the lead to one run.
Brett Sitzmann would shut the door on a comeback with three straight strikeouts to end the game.Â

Wesselmann earns his fourth win of the season after going 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Sitzmann threw 1.1 innnings to secure his fifth save. All four of Sitzmann's outs were from strikeouts.

Lange, Evers, Riemer and Hmielewski all reached base multiple times for BC. Riemer and Cone legged out extra base hits, while
Brayden Artzer stole one base.

Game 2 vs Northwestern – L, 3-9
Â
The Red Raiders opened the game scoring runs in each of the first four innings to take a 6-3 three lead heading into the fifth inning.Â

Conner Lange drove in the first BC run with a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Hmielewski. With two outs in the fourth,
Walter Hunt sent a home run to left-center field and later in the inning
Mike Anthony singled with runners in scoring position to cut the deficit to 3-4.Â

Northwestern added three insurance runs in the sixth, and the Chargers were unable to mount a rally in the seventh as they fell 3-9.
Â
Anthony went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Hmielewski and Riemer tallied two walks each.

Dalen Blair is tagged with the loss after going 1.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned).
Â
The Chargers are back in Seward, Nebraska on Monday for an elimination game against the winner of Mount Marty vs Concordia.Â
