The Charger baseball team dropped the first two games of a four-game series against RV Doane Saturday. BC drops to 20-12 overall and 8-6 in GPAC play.
Â
"Today was a tough day. Doane has won 16 games in a row for a reason," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "We need to compete better in the box tomorrow but we're excited to get another crack at it tomorrow."
Game 1 – L, 1-4
Â
Cam Riemer smashed a home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning to open up the series. However, the Charger bats fell quiet after Reimer's homer, tallying just three more hits in the contest.
Â
The Chargers did record five walks and had opportunities throughout the contest to score, with runners in scoring position in four different innings but were unable to get timely hits to bring them home.
Â
Despite being tagged with the loss,
Jacob Wesselmann put together another dominating performance on the mound for the Chargers. Wesselmann went 8.0 innings and allowed six hits, three runs and had nine strikeouts. He retired the Tiger batters in order in four different innings. Through eight innings he had allowed just one run with nine K's but ran into trouble in the ninth when he gave up a two-run home run.Â
Â
Mike Anthony led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, but a double play followed by a strikeout would stop a potential BC rally.
Â
Riemer reached base three times with one hit and two walks. Anthony, Hmielewski and
Dawson Forcella all notched hits for the Cliff. Hmielewski swiped two bases, while Riemer had one stolen base.
Â
Game 2 – L, 2-10
Â
The offensive struggles continued in game two for the Cliff as they notched just two runs on four hits.Â
Â
Jared Sitzmann found himself in scoring position after walking and advancing to second off a wild pitch. However, back-to-back Charger outs would end the inning.
Â
Doane led off the third with a solo home run and would later load the bases with two outs. An RBI single, followed by a base on balls would extend Doane's lead to 3-0. The Tigers scored another run in the fourth and four in the sixth to go up 8-0.Â
Â
Jake Allen got the Chargers on the scoreboard in bottom of the sixth, sending a two-run home run over the left field fence. Doane added two more runs in the seventh, and the Chargers went down in order in the bottom half to close out game two.
Â
Sitzmann reached base twice with one hit and one walk. Anthony scored one run and Allen drove in two.Â
Â
Dalen Blair is tagged with the loss after going 5.2 innings. He gave up eight runs with five strikeouts.
Austin Carter threw 1.1 innings in relief and struck out two while surrendering two runs.
Â
The Chargers are right back at Bishop Mueller Field tomorrow for game three and four against the Tigers. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
