BC baseball stumbles against RV Doane

The Chargers fell in both games Sunday to RV Doane at Bishop Mueller Field. BC was swept in the four-game series and fall to 20-14 (8-8 GPAC).

Game 1 – L, 0-8

Yesterday's offensive struggles carried over into game one, as the Cliff were held scoreless with only five hits. The Chargers had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but were unable to cross home plate.

Easton Cone led off the third with a double, and advanced to third after a Mike Anthony single. The bases were loaded after Connor Lange was hit by pitch, but the Tigers struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

Jared Sitzmann walked to start the fourth, and with two outs Cone recorded his second hit of the day with a single to move Sitzmann to second. Doane retired the next Charger batter to get the third out of the inning.

Doane scored their first run in the second inning and took a commanding lead with a three-run third inning. They scored one run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

Ryan Riddle started on the mound and went 6.0 innings. He gave up five runs (three earned), seven hits and struck out six.

Cone reached base in all three at-bats with two hits and one walk, while Anthony went 2-for-4.

Game 2 – L, 12-14

The Charger bats came alive in game two, putting up 12 runs on 15 hits in an 11-inning game. The 15 hits set a new single-season high and marks the 14th time they have reached double-digit hits.

Doane opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two-out double to score one run. The Tigers attempted to score a runner from first base on the play, but Jake Allen tagged the runner out at the plate off Cone's relay throw from Sitzmann.

Anthony singled to lead off the bottom of the inning, and advanced to second after an error by the pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt. Cam Riemer followed with a single and moved to second on the throw to third base. Allen recorded a base hit through the left side, scoring both runners but was called out at second trying to advance on the throw to the plate. Graham Palsma would drive in the third run of the frame with a single.

The Tigers wasted little time retaking the lead with five runs in the top of the second. Anthony scored his second run of the game on a Walter Hunt single in the bottom half to cut the deficit to 4-5.

The Chargers and Tigers each scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Dawson Forcella brought the Chargers within one with a RBI single to score Sitzmann.

With a runner on first in the seventh, Hunt hit a long fly ball to the warning track and legged out a triple to drive in the game-tying run.

Brett Sitzmann took the mound in relief in the sixth inning and was key in the Charger comeback efforts. Sitzmann held the Tigers scoreless over the next three innings to force extra innings.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings, but Sitzmann was able to work his out of the jams. He struck out one and forced a groundout to escape the sixth unscathed and ended the seventh with a groundout.

In the top of the 10th, Doane scored one run on Sitzmann to take a 12-11 lead.

With two outs in the bottom half of the inning, Jared Sitzmann came through in the clutch with a solo home run to extend the game. However, the Tigers scored twice in the top of the 11th and BC was unable to respond falling 14-12.

Five Chargers tallied multiple hits, led by Riemer's 3-for-4 performance to go with three runs and two RBIs. Hunt had two RBIs, while Sitzmann and Anthony had three runs each.

The Chargers will head to Des Moines, Iowa Wednesday for a nonconference meeting with Grand View. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. against the Vikings.
