The Briar Cliff baseball team earned a 2-0 sweep over Mayville State Tuesday behind an early offensive outburst in both games. The Chargers improve to 20-10 (8-4 GPAC) on the season and 9-1 on Bishop Mueller Field. The Chargers scored nine runs in the first three innings of game one, followed by six first innings runs in game two.

"Today was a good day. We got a lot of different guys action while playing pretty clean baseball all day," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "It was nice to play at home again after the long stretch on the road!"

The Charger bats continued their hot streak today with 19 total runs and are averaging 10.7 runs per game and 11.5 hits in their last four games. The Chargers received hits from 13 different batters, while seven notched an extra base hit. The BC pitching staff allowed just seven runs over the two games and struck out 17 batters.

Game 1 – W, 10-4

Alex Kremer found himself in a jam in the first inning with the bases loaded and two outs. He escaped the inning unscathed by forcing a ground out to end the inning.

Jake Allen's double to begin the second inning kicked off four straight hits for the Cliff.
Walter Hunt followed with a double of his own to score Allen. The Chargers had runners on the corner after a
Mike Anthony single. The third double of the inning, courtesy of
Graham Palsma, drove in Hunt to take a 2-0 lead.Â

Trevor Adler drove in Anthony with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Palsma crossed home plate after a
Matthew Hmielewski ground out. The Comets scored once in the top of the third, and the Cliff responded with five in the bottom half. Anthony, Hmielewski and
Cam Riemer all tallied RBIs in the inning.

Brayden Artzer scored his second run of the game in the fourth, as the Chargers grabbed a 10-1 lead. The Comets scored three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 10-4.

Kremer earned the win after going 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. He gave up eight hits and four runs (three earned).
Christen Peterson took the mound in relief in the sixth inning, allowing one hit while walking one in his 2.0 innings of work.

Riemer, Hunt, Anthony and Palsma tallied two hits each, and five Chargers scored two runs. Hmielewski led the Cliff with two RBIs, and Artzer stole two bases.

Game 2 – W, 9-3

The Charger bats picked up right where they left off in game one by scoring six first inning runs. BC took a 4-0 edge after
Connor Lange, Hunt and Anthony recorded three doubles in a row.
Easton Cone scored Anthony with an infield single and would later score to push the lead to 6-0.
Matthew Delgado shut the Comets down in the second inning, recording three of his six strikeouts. Hunt continued his solid day at the plate, leading off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer over the left field fence. The Cliff tacked on two more runs in the inning to take a 9-1 advantage.Â

The Comets would score two more runs in the game, but relief pitchers
Tyler Kjose and
Brett Sitzmann would close out the 9-3 win.Â

Delgado got the start on the mound, going 3.0 innings and allowed six hits with six strikeouts. Kjose is credited with the win after going 3.0 innings with four K's. Sitzmann pitched 1.0 innings with one strikeout.

Trey Rogers was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Lange, Hunt and Cone combined for six RBIs.Â

The Chargers are back at home this Saturday and Sunday for a four-game series against Doane. Game one is set for 1 p.m. on Bishop Mueller Field.
