The Briar Cliff softball team continued their hot streak of play Saturday with a sweep over Doane to improve to 15-8 overall (5-1 GPAC). The Chargers have won nine of their last 10 contests and have outscored opponents 73 to 38 over that span.
"I'm really proud of how the girls came out and battled every inning," said head coach
Erin Bly. "We fought back both games and found a way to get the job done as a team."
Game 1 – W, 3-1
Doane tallied the first run of the contest in the top of the second with a leadoff solo home run. The pitching duo of
Kayla Guerrero and
Georgia Krohn would settle in and hold the Tigers scoreless over the next six innings of play.
After a leadoff walk from
Aubrey Chichurka,
Kylee Lukes reached base via error on the first baseman. Chichurka advanced to third on the error and was awarded the run due to obstruction from the third baseman when trying to cross home plate.
After stealing third base, Lukes would score the game winning run after an
Alexis Westercamp single to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Three straight singles in the bottom of the fifth loaded the bases for the Cliff. Krohn drew a walk to add an insurance run and take a 3-1 lead.
Krohn closed out the Tigers by retiring the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
Kayla Guerrero earned the start and went 3.0 innings, allowiong just one run. Krohn gets the win after throwing 4.0 scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts.
Chichurka tallied two hits and a run, while Krohn and Westercamp notched an RBI each.
"Our pitchers did a great job keeping us in the game by mixing speeds and location. Our staff did a great job supporting each other," said Bly. "Westercamp had a great day for us and made the difference for us at the plate."
Game 2 – W, 6-4
With runners on first and third in the bottom of the first, the Chargers executed a double steal with Lukes swiping second base and
Karina Cupples crossing home plate.
Jessica James drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Doane scored their first run in top of the fourth and added three more in the fifth to take a 4-2 edge.
Josie Chronic led off the fifth with a single. She advanced to scoring position by stealing second and a Chichurka groundout. Chronic crossed home plate off a double from Lukes.
Westercamp sent a three-run bomb over the left field to give BC a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Krohn held the Tigers hitless over the final two innings to preserve the 6-3 win.
Mackenna Raby gave up five hits, three runs and struck in three in her 4.0 innings of work. Krohn is credited with the win after going 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Cupples, Chichurka, Lukes and Westercamp tallied two hits each. Lukes scored twice while Westercamp notched three RBIs.
