Wesselmann, Blair toss complete game shutouts

The Charger pitching duo of Jacob Wesselmann and Dalen Blair shined in Hastings, Nebraska Sunday as the Cliff took the series 2-0 over Hastings. BC won 3-0 in game one behind a two-hit shutout from Wesselmann, while Blair went the distance in game two allowing just one hit in a 7-0 win.

"It was great to get back out there after being off for a week and our starting pitching was incredible," said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "We have to enjoy this for a few hours and shift our attention to a good Dordt team tomorrow afternoon."

Game 1 – W, 3-0

Walter Hunt drove in the game winning run in the top of the first with a single to score Trey Rogers. Mike Anthony added another first-inning run, scoring Cam Riemer off an error by the first baseman.

Quienten Evers walked to lead off the second and advanced to third after stealing second, followed by a wild pitch. Matthew Hmielewski drove in Evers to take a 3-0 lead with a ground out to second.

Wesselmann struck out eight in his seven innings of work. He gave up two hits and walked four and allowed just one runner to reach second base. He retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings.

Hunt went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a double. Evers and Jake Allen each tallied a double.

Game 2 – W, 7-0

Blair followed Wesselmann with a gem of his own in game two by throwing a nine-inning, one-hit shutout. After walking a Bronco in the first inning, Blair retired 17 batters in a row with five strikeouts. He totaled eight strikeouts and forced 13 groundouts.

Similar to game one, the Chargers advanced to third base in the first inning after a stolen base and a wild pitch. Hunt reached base off an error from the center fielder to drive in Allen and take a 1-0 lead.

Anthony added an insurance run in the third by driving in pinch runner Brayden Artzer. BC tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Trey Rogers and Riemer drove in runs with extra base hits, while Hunt added his second RBI of the game.

Hmielewski went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI, and Anthony was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a walk. Riemer, Allen, Easton Cone and Rogers all tallied an extra base hit. Artzer scored three runs and stole three bases.

The Chargers move to 15-7 overall (5-1 GPAC) and have won five straight. BC is back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa at 4 p.m.
