Chargers take series win over Morningside

The Charger baseball team took the series win over crosstown rival Morningside, winning game one 8-7, and game two 10-8.  Ryan Riddle entered game one from the bullpen for the Chargers and tossed 4.2 shutout innings and struck out 10 batters. Cam Reimer continued his hot streak by hitting two home runs on the day.

"A tremendous start to the season by winning the series against a hot team," said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "We are starting to click offensively and Ryan Riddle and Austin Carter were tremendous to close out the wins."
 
Game 1 - W, 8-7

In the top of the second, BC struck first after Walter Hunt scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Easton Cone hit an RBI double to drive in Quienten Evers and gave the Chargers an early 2-0 lead. Rylan Aamold made quick work in the bottom of the second, retiring the side in order.

Riemer in the top of the third hit a three-run shot and gave the Chargers a 5-0 lead.  The Mustangs responded in the bottom of the third with a grand slam by Jayson Willers as they trailed 5-4 heading into the fourth.
 
Riemer, in the top of the fourth, singled to drive in Matthew Hmieleski to take a 6-4 lead. Jacob Allen followed up with an RBI double and BC led 7-4. Morningside's Jacob O'Dell hit a two-RBI double to cut the lead to one. With the bases loaded, Willers drew a walk, and the Mustangs tied the game 7-7.
 
Riddle took the mound over the next four innings and shutdown the Morningside offense striking out ten batters and did not allow a single hit.
 
In the top of the eighth, BC took an 8-7 lead after Jared Sitzmann reached first on a fielding error, allowing Brayden Artzer to score the game winning run. Riddle made quick work of the Mustangs in the bottom of the eighth, striking out the first two batters and forcing a fly-out to earn his second win of the season. 
 
Reimer led the Charger offense, going 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, followed by Hmielewski's who went 2-for-4.
 
Game 2 - W, 10-8

In the top of the third, BC used the momentum from game one, and scored nine runs in the top of the third. After a Mustang fielding error, Reimer and Trey Rogers were able to score on the play. Connor Lange scored after Allen reached first on a fielder's choice, followed by Sitzmann's RBI single to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead. Mike Anthony crossed home plate after Easton Cone's groundout to extend the lead to 5-0. Hmielewski belted a two-run homer, followed by Reimer's two-run home run to give the Chargers a 9-0 lead. Trey Rogers capped the scoring off for BC, drawing a walk with the bases loaded and the Cliff led 10-0.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Morningside drove in five runs, capped off by Carter Ades two RBI single as they trailed 10-5.
 
The Mustangs cut the lead to two after Alex Calabrese hit a two-run homer followed by a sacrifice groundout by Carter Kratz to trail 10-8.
 
Alex Kremer and Austin Carter closed out the contest for the Chargers on the mound. Kremer earns the win for the Cliff and gave up four hits and recorded two strikeouts. Carter earned the save after giving up one hit and striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.
 
Trey Rogers went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and drew two walks in the contest. Sitzmann went 3-for-3 with an RBI.  Reimer went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Reimer is hitting .406/.479/.938 on the year with nine home runs.
 
The Chargers improved to 13-7 overall (3-1 GPAC) and are 8-2 in their last 10 contests. They return to action against Dordt Thursday in Sioux Center, Iowa. Game one is set for 5:00 p.m. with game two following shortly after.
