Anthony walks off in game two, Chargers split with Mustangs

The Briar Cliff baseball team hosted Morningside Saturday at Bishop Mueller Field for the first two games of a four-game series with the Mustangs. After falling in game one 2-3, Mike Anthony walked off in the second contest and BC won 6-5.

The Chargers move to 11-7 overall and are 7-1 at Bishop Mueller Field.

"I'm really proud of the way we battled back in game two after a tough opener," said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "Morningside is playing really well so it was great to even the series up heading into tomorrow."

Game 1 – L, 2-3

In the top of the first, Jacob Wesselmann found himself in a jam with Mustang runners on second and third. Back-to-back strikeouts from Wesselman ended the inning without a run.

Matthew Hmielewski walked to lead off the third inning. He stole second base and moved over to third after a Jared Sitzmann groundout. Cam Riemer drove him in with a double to left field and the Cliff took a 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs tied the ballgame in the top of the fourth with a sac fly to right field. In the bottom half of the inning Trey Rogers legged out a double and drove in Walter Hunt to retake a one run lead.

Morningside drove in a runner from first base with two outs in both the fifth and seventh innings to take a 3-2 edge into the final half inning. The Chargers went down in order in the seventh and fell 2-3 in game one.

Wesselmann is tagged with the loss in his complete game effort. He gave up six hits, three earned runs and struck out 11 batters.

Hunt went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Rogers and Riemer also recorded hits for BC.

Game 2 – W, 6-5

Game two of Saturday's doubleheader opened with three scoreless innings from both sides. Morningside got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers answered in the fifth with two runs, taking a 2-1 edge. Rogers scored Hmielewski with a sac fly to right field, and Jake Allen drove in Riemer when he reached base via error by the shortstop. The Mustangs scored four runs on five hits in the sixth to retake a 5-2 lead.

Allen started the Charger rally with a leadoff single in the eighth, and in the next at-bat Hunt sent a two-run homer to cut the deficit to one. Pinch hitter Matt Delgado would later drive in the game tying run with a RBI double.

After a big eighth inning from the Charger bats, Brett Sitzmann wasted little time in the top of the ninth by retiring the Mustang batters in order. In the final three innings, Sitzmann allowed zero hits while striking out two.

Rogers walked to kick off the bottom of the ninth, and advanced to second off a sac bunt from Riemer. With runners on first and second and two outs, Anthony walked off with a bloop single to right-center field that scored Rogers to close out a 6-5 game two win.

Dalen Blair started on the mound for the Cliff and went 5.2 innings. Sitzmann is credited with the win after throwing 3.1 innings in relief. He allowed just two hits and one earned run.

Anthony went 4-for-5 at the plate with one RBI. Rogers tallied two hits, while Hunt drove in two. Riemer and Hmielewski each legged out a triple.

The Chargers will close out the series against Morningisde with a doubleheader tomorrow at MercyOne Field in Sioux City, Iowa. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. with game two to follow.
