Jacob Wesselmann became the Chargers' all-time leader in strikeouts after recording 13 K's in game one and now sits at 224 in his career. The Briar Cliff baseball team went 1-1 against Presentation Thursday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Cam Riemer, the GPAC Player of the Week, belted a home run in his third straight game, pushing his season total to five.
Game 1 – W, 9-1
Jacob Wesselmann took the mound and made quick work in the top of the first with a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.
Jared Sitzmann led off the bottom of the inning with a single and wasn't on base for long, as Riemer drove him in with a home run.The Chargers loaded the bases after a hit by pitch and back-to-back walks but were unable to bring in the runners.
The Saints threatened in the top of the second with a runner on third, but Wesselmann responded with three straight strikeouts to end the inning.
The Charger scored seven runs in the fourth inning off three hits and four walks. With runners on second and third,
Jake Allen tripled scoring two to take a 6-1 lead. Quintin Evers legged out a triple of his own later in the inning, scoring two more runs. Evers would later score off a
Trey Rogers single and BC led 9-1.
Wesselmann retired the side in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to close out the win. He tossed a one-run complete game allowing just one hit and walked two. Wesselmann's 13 strikeouts sets a new career high.
Riemer, Allen and Evers notched extra base hits and drove in two runs each.
Matthew Hmielewski had one double and stole two bases.
Game 2 – L, 2-4
After giving up a first inning run, it took the Chargers until the top of the fourth to score the game-tying run.
Mike Anthony doubled to lead off the inning, and crossed home plate after a double from
Connor Lange. The Saints responded in the fourth, scoring two runs to take a 3-1 edge.
The Chargers cut the deficit to one in the sixth after
Brayden Artzer scored off an
Easton Cone single. Artzer was a pinch runner and got into scoring position after stealing second and third. The Saints scored another insurance run in the bottom of the inning to go up 4-2.
The Chargers found runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh, but a strikeout from Christian Peterson closed out the Presentation win.
Dalen Blair is tagged with the loss after going 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts.
Ryan Riddle threw 0.2 innings in relief and struck out one.
Anthony led the Cliff at the plate going 3-for-4 with one double and one run scored.
The Charges and Saints close out the series with a doubleheader tomorrow morning in U.S. Bank Stadium. First pitch of game one is set for 6 a.m. with game two to follow.
