Behind 15 total runs and a pair of quality starts from
Kayla Guerrero and
Georgia Krohn, the Briar Cliff softball team went 2-0 over Sterling Monday. The Chargers took the four-game series 3-1 over the Warriors and are now 3-5 on the season.
Guerrero and Krohn both went 7.0 inning and earned the win in their respective starts.
Jessica James went 5-for-5 with three RBIs and four runs.
Game 1 – W, 11-4
Karina Cupples got the Chargers on the scoreboard first, driving in James with a single to second base in the top of the third. In the next inning, James added to the Charger lead by driving in
Kylee Lukes.
The Chargers extended their lead to 11-0 after a four-run sixth inning and a five-run seventh. After loading the bases in the sixth, Cupples knocked in her second run of the game, scoring Lukes. In the next at-bat, Chronic drove in two more runs with a single.
James tallied her second RBI in the seventh, while Lukes crossed home plate for the third time. The Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, but a ground out to the Guerrero closed out the 11-4 win.
Guerrero allowed seven hits and just one earned run with one strikeout in her seven innings of work.
Cupples went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs. James reached base in all four of her plate appearances with three hits and one walk. She scored three times and drove in two runs.
Game 2 – W, 4-1
After a single in the second inning, James moved into scoring position by stealing second.
Alexis Westercamp brought her home with a single as the Cliff took a 1-0 lead.
With two outs and runners on first and second,
Aubrey Chichurka singled to left field scoring Chronic. James continued her impressive day at the plate with a single to center field, scoring Lukes. Cupples stole second and
Veronica Pitzl scored to go up 4-1 on the same play off an error by the catcher.
The Warriors scored their lone run in the third and would later load the bases in the inning. Krohn held Sterling to the one run, escaping the inning without further damage with a strikeout.
Krohn tossed a one-run complete game with nine strikeouts while giving up just six hits. Krohn notched three 1-2-3 innings. She also went 1-for-3 with a double.
Callie Billings, Chichurka and James each tallied two hits. Chronic and Krohn each had a double while Cupples and James stole one base apiece.
The Chargers take the field in Wichita, Kansas Friday for the Friends Tournament. Opponents and game times are still to be determined.
