Box Score 2 The Briar Cliff softball team dropped its doubleheader against Cottey Sunday, falling 12-10 in game one and 6-0 in game two.
Callie Billings went six-for-nine at the plate and scored three runs on the day.
"Tough day. Hats off to Cottey today," said head coach
Erin Bly. "They played two good games. We fought hard the second game but just couldn't close the door."
Game 1 - L, 0-6
BC gave up 3 runs in the first two innings and couldn't capitalize with runners on base. Cottey added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth and the Chargers were shutout in the contest falling 6-0.
Billings went 2-for-4 at the plate while
Brooke Masi, Chronic, and Cupples all contributed a hit.
Kayla Gurrero went 5.1 innings giving up one earned run and struck out three batters.
Morgan Jones closed the game going 1.2 innings and only gave up one earned run.
The Comets Lacey Cruz went the full seven innings giving up seven hits and striking out nine.
Game 2 - L, 10-12
The Chargers fell into an early whole in game two, giving up six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Cliff rallied back, scoring six runs in the top of the third and fourth to tie the game.
Cottey college responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth, along with four in the bottom of the fifth to take a 12-6 lead heading into the final two innings.
BC's comeback fell just short as they scored four runs in the final inning and fell 12-10.
The Cliff left a lot of runs on the board, leaving 11 players on base despite generating 16 hits.
Billings was 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs.
Josie Chronic was 2-for-5 with two RBIs followed by
Aubrey Chichurka three RBIs.
Karina Cupples and
Georgia Krohn both had a multi-hit game.
The Chargers fall to 1-3 overall and will travel for a doubleheader Monday against Sterling. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. with game two beginning shortly after.
