The Charger men's golf team kicked off their spring season Monday at the San Antonio Shootout in San Antonio, Texas.As a team, the Chargers are in eighth place with a 649 (324, 325) and are eight strokes off the teams tied for sixth.
Wayland Baptist are the leaders after 36 holes with a score of 606 (303, 303). Oliver Gaisford (Our Lady of the Lake) and Max Schliesing (Houston – Victoria) are the invidual leaders with scores of 145.
"36-hole days are the equivalent of a 10 hour marathon," said head coach
Ben Irlbeck. "Conditions and fatigue become a factor today. The guys had great stretches of golf, but it showed it was our first round of the spring season as well. I have no doubt we will rebound tomorrow and look at pushing the teams ahead of us."
Shaunak Rama paced the Chargers on day one, carding a 158 (80, 78 and is tied for 17th). Rama improved by two strokes in his second round on TPC San Antonio, thanks in part to a 37 (+1) front nine.
Andrew Arndorfer had the most improvement in his second 18 holes. After carding an 82 (+10) in his first 18 holes, he fired a 78 (+6) in round two and is tied for 23rd.
Mason Collins turned in a 165 (82, 83), while
Gregorio Fernandez had a 169 (83, 86). Collins sits in 32nd place.
Elijah Lamoureux was the fifth member of the Charger squad and turned in a 169 ( 80, 89). Fernandez and Lamoureux are in a tie for 38th.
Desmond Landin and
Davess Verdugo are competing individually and are tied for 30th and 35th, respectively. Landing turned in a 163 (82, 81), while Verdugo had a 167 (81, 86).
The Chargers are back at TPC San Antonio tomorrow for the final day of the San Antonio Shootout.
