Briar Cliff softball opened their 2022 campaign in Leavenworth, Kansas Friday. The Chargers dropped game one to Evangel 2-5, and fell to Saint Mary in their second contest 2-7.
Game 1 vs. Evangel - L, 2-5
The Chargers were tied up with Evangel 2-2 going into the top of the third inning. After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first,
Josie Chronic hit a RBI double to tie the game in the top of the second. From that point on, the Chargers offense was shut-out through the last five innings and fell 5-2.
Chronic went 2-for-4 at the plate recording two RBI's.
Brooke Masi and
Karina Cupples were the only other Chargers to record hits.
Georgia Krohn went all six innings for the Chargers in the circle giving up 11 hits and five earned runs.
Evangel's Megan Stone went 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI while Josie Allcock went 3-for-4 with three RBI's. Abby Jo Emmit takes the win in the circle, going 4.1 innings and recording eight strikeouts.
Game 2 vs. Saint Mary - L, 2-7
The Chargers gave up four runs in the first inning to the Spires. In the top of the first, the Chargers looked to get early runs on the board with two outs and runners on scoring position.
Georgia Krohn's at-bat ended with a ground-out to first ending the inning and leaving two runners on base.
The Spires started the bottom of the first with a triple from Alexis Ray. Ray scored after an error by the Chargers. Madisyn Thompson doubled the next at-bat, followed by an Allie Cox 3-run shot and the Spires took a 4-0 lead.
The Chargers got on the board in the top of the second, as
Callie Billings hit a RBA single to drive in
Hunter Pitts to trail 4-1. The Spires scored another run in the bottom of the second after Sadie McWilliam doubled, scoring Hazel Faz and extending the lead to 5-1. The Chargers'
Veronica Pitzl scored in the top of the fourth after an error by the spires. Lukes grounded out to end the inning as the Chargers left two on base and trailed 5-2.
McWilliam added insurance runs with a double, driving in two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Spires. At the top of the seventh, the Chargers looked to rally but went down in order and fell 7-2.
Callie Billings went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Pitts, Pitzl, Westercamp, and Krohn all recorded a hit. Pitzl also recorded a stolen base.
Caroline Dooley takes the loss on the mound for the Chargers after giving up two earned runs.
The Spires Ray went 3-for-3 at the plate followed by McWilliam's four RBI performance. Shelby Mohler takes the win in the pitching circle going 6.2 innings and giving up six hits and one earned run.
The Chargers will be back in action Friday February 18 for a doubleheader with Stephens in Fulton, Missouri. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00PM.
