CHARGERS DROP ROAD CONTEST AT MAYVILLE STATE

The Briar Cliff volleyball team pushed Mayville State to the end of every set but fell in three to the Comets Monday night. The Chargers loss by a combined eight points and were led by Alexis Johnson's 11 kills.

"The bright spot of the night was Alexis who had some key kills that helped us move ahead of Mayville State," said head coach Lindsey Weatherford. "Unfortunately they are a strong team and twice they were able to overcome our lead to come back and win the set."

In the first frame, the Chargers jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, but the advantage quickly evaporated with a nine-point run from the Comets. Trailing 24-31 late, BC scored three straight to pull within after a Chloe Johnson and Sami Wasmund block. However, the Comets ended the set in the next rally with a kill from Rachel Hill.

The Chargers held a 4-3 lead to start set two, but after a 4-0 run the Comets would hold the lead the rest of the way. Three straight kills from the Blue and Gold brought the set to 20-22, however the Comets would score three of the next four to take the set 25-21.

Briar Cliff took their largest lead of the night 18-15 in set three but was answered by an 8-0 Comet run. The Chargers made it interesting however, scoring four straight to make it a one-point game. The Comets closed out the match with a block to secure the sweep.

"Tonight, our block got going and we were able to get in front of their hitters often. We have been working on our blocking, so that was something positive that came out of tonight because we know that on Wednesday, we will have to block balls at a high rate," said Weatherford. "I can't say enough about Toria or Sami who are very consistent as far as middles go and continue to put away and block balls at crucial times for us."

Alexis Johnson hit .235 on the way to her 11 kills and had three digs. Chloe Johnson notched nine kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Wasmund recorded two assists and five blocks. Abbey Jones had 21 digs while Tannah Heath had 14 digs and 25 assists.

The Chargers return to the Newman Flanagan Center on Wednesday to host #10 Dakota Wesleyan. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. between the Chargers and Tigers.
