After the first 18 holes of the Swede Shootout Monday, the Charger women's golf team sits tied for third place. BC picked up their play as the day progressed after a slow start and are 15 shots back of the leaders.
"Ladies got off to a very slow start," said head coach
Ben Irlbeck. "It seemed like as the temperature rose this morning, so did our performance. We did battle back to get within 10 strokes of the leaders, but we left a few more out there on the final holes."
Helene Getz Bergmo and
Kelly Baade are in the top-10 individually for the Cliff. Bergmo turned in an uncharacteristic +9 on the front nine, but a birdie on hole 10 got her back on track. Bergmo recorded two birdies on the back nine and is tied for sixth with a score of 86.
Baade improved her score by six strokes on the back-nine to finish with an 86. Baade had the shot of the day on hole 11, recording an eagle with a hole out from 110 yards out.
Grace Johanson is tied for 12th after turning in a 90 in her first round.
Frankie Valencia is in 16th place with a 91. Valencia's three birdies on the day tied for the most in the field.
Abbigale Miller was the fifth member of the BC squad and turned in a 106.
"We honestly seemed distracted as we played today - it happens, at times, on courses with many penalty areas and out of bounds," said Irlbeck. "Turkey Creek has them on every hole. We will look to go over a few hole-by-hole strategies tonight and come back looking to move up tomorrow. Look for a good bounce-back round from this bunch."
The Chargers rolled in the most birdies with six and recorded the lone eagle. BC had the second-best scoring total on par-threes (+14). Bethany College is in first with a score of 337, while Baker's Paula Martin-Montero is the individual leader with a 78.
The Blue and Gold close out the fall season tomorrow with round two of the Swede Shootout in McPherson, Kansas.
