Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Briar Cliff completes reverse sweep over Morningside

The Charger women's volleyball team found themselves down 0-2 on the night against cross town rivals Morningside.  The Chargers stayed resilient and were able to complete the reverse sweep, stunning Morningside in Allee gym Wednesday night.

"Morningside is a tough team and have been playing well recently," said head coach Lindsey Weatherford. "It's always nice to pick up a road win in the GPAC!"

Set one featured back and forth action throughout, with both teams deadlocked at 20-20 in the back half of the set.  The Mustangs used a four-point run to take set one 25-21.  Tyra Blue had 5 kills in the set. Set two was similar to the first, as Morningside escaped with a narrow 26-24 set win. Abbie Ericson posted 5 kills in the set while Maureen Imrie and Abbey Jones added one service ace apiece.

Facing a 0-2 deficit and match point at hand, the Chargers would used a strong set three to gain momentum the rest of the way.  With the score tied at 13-13, the Cliff used a four-point run to lead the set 17-13 and forced a timeout by Morningside. The Mustangs cut the Charger lead to 20-18, but the Cliff would find a way to close out the Mustangs taking the next five points and winning 25-18.

The Chargers and Mustangs wouldn't give an inch in set four, trading points for most of the first half of the set. Tied at 12-12, the Chargers forced a Mustang timeout after going on a 5-1 run to take a 17-13 lead. The Mustangs would come out strong, erasing the deficit to one with the score 17-16.  The Cliff would then flip the switch outscoring the Mustangs 8-1 in the final moments of set four to take it 25-17.  Chloe Johnson added five kills in the set followed by Ericson's four.

Back-to-back services aces to start the final set from Maurenn Imrie helped the Chargers jump out to a 9-4 lead. The Mustangs did their best to claw back into the set, but the Cliff shut the door taking a 13-6 lead off a four-point run.  The Cliff would end the night with a Sami Wasmund kill taking the set 15-8.

"Maureen Imrie played really well and was a great leader on the court tonight," said Weatherford. "She put our hitters in an excellent position to score and tallied her own points on kills and service aces."

Chloe Johnson led the Chargers in kills with 15, followed by Ericson (12), and Toria Andre (nine).  Tannah Heath added three service aces to along with her team-high 23 digs and eight assists.  Imrie had three service aces to go along with her team-high 23 assists and 17 digs.  Ericson and Toria Andre shared a team high five blocks.  Madilyn Wagaman also added 21 assists.

"Our balanced attack of Tyra, Abbie, Chloe and Toria really figured out in set three how to score and block well to keep us on a run in the final sets," noted Weatherford.

The Chargers move to 6-10 overall (1-5 GPAC) and look forward to a Homecoming meeting with Jamestown Saturday October 2nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Newman Flanagan Center.
