The Briar Cliff baseball team is still alive in the GPAC Postseason Tournament. After dropping its morning contest to Concordia, Briar Cliff beat Morningside 5-3 in the afternoon's elimination game. The team will play Concordia again Saturday morning to determine who advances to the GPAC Championship Game.
Nicholas Cole spent 7.2 innings on the mound for the Chargers, giving up six hits and three runs with five strikeouts.
Austin Carter came in to close out the game and earned the save for the Cliff.
"Nick Cole was really, really good today," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "He is a tremendous leader for us and there was no way he was losing that game. I am really happy for him and the guys and we are thrilled to be playing another day."
Jake Allen doubled to drive in
Harrison Jestel in the top of the first and get the scoring going for the Cliff. BC added two more in the fifth on RBIs from Jestel and Allen to score
Jared Sitzmann and
Darnell Prince.
Cyler Melvin scored the winning run in the sixth. Matt Hmiliewski put down a sacrifice bunt and was out at first, but allowed Melvin to go home from third base.
Down 5-1, Morningside looked to make a comeback in the eighth by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, but Carter and the BC defense held off the Mustangs for the win.
Sitzmann, Jestel and Michael Anthony had two hits each for BC and Allen had two RBIs.
The Chargers dropped their morning game to Concordia 9-1.
Dalen Blair takes the loss and
Darnell Prince was responsible for the Chargers' only run with a solo homer in the second inning.
Briar Cliff advances to play Saturday morning against Concordia. The Bulldogs are unbeaten in the tournament, so the Cliff will have to take two games from the host team to advance to Tuesday's Championship.
